Senior Data Systems Analyst

Job Summary/Objective:
This position will serve as a lead in the development, design implementation of centralized reports and dashboards across internal and external reporting and platforms. This role is foundationally responsible for providing internal and external user access to their various data assets via appealing and effective reports, extracts, dashboards, and analysis.
Essential Functions:
- Synthesizes and translates internal and external business data needs into the development and implementation of creative, clear and effective solutions with BI tools such as Power BI and Tableau
- Project manager for organizational data initiatives and works as project leader for complex projects
- Leads data analyst team in all relevant aspects of new system implementations
- Partners with internal stakeholders to develop reports or address data access and visualization needs
- Liaises with other departments and teams to define and implement necessary data sets and data models to fuel data access and visualization requirements for end users.
- Utilizes developed data visualization and analytical skills to effectively communicate and display key insights and trends
- Leads the development, maintenance, and management of advanced reporting, analytics, dashboards, and other BI solutions
- Performs and documents data analysis, data validation, and data mapping/design, by accessing multiple data resources residing in data warehouses and transactional data environments/sources
- Mentors and guides junior members of the Data Services team in best practices for data analysis and reporting
- Performs all tasks of a Data Systems Analyst but at a high level of efficiency and on more complex assignments
- All other duties as assigned.
Competency: Knowledge/ Skills/Abilities:
- Familiar with modern data architecture and design.
- Proven track record of designing creative and appealing visuals, reports, and dashboards.
- Ability to work effectively on multiple priorities with strict deliverable timelines.
- Experience working with relational databases and data warehousing environments.
- Knowledgeable in Microsoft SQL query creation and tuning (table joins, calculations, aggregations, etc.).
- Experience in data modeling with strong and demonstratable data management skills.
- Familiar with working in cloud environments such as Azure, utilizing tools such as Azure Data Factory and Azure Synapse Analytics.
- Ability to utilize programming languages such as R and Python for data analysis.
- Strong troubleshooting and performance tuning with a high proficiency in optimization.
- Advanced computer skills in typical corporate software applications (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
- Excellent written and communication skills.
- Strong attention to detail and responsibility for the quality of your work.
- Ability to foster a cooperative work environment with multiple internal stakeholders (e.g., other divisions and departments)
Required Education and Experience:
- Five or more years continuous experience as a Data Systems Analyst, or business Systems Analyst in a similar hardware and software environment.
Preferred Education and Experience:
- Prefer a bachelor’s degree in a quantitative field of study (Computer Science, Math, Economics, Financial, Statistics, Science, Engineering); 2+ years of experience with Microsoft Power BI or similar business intelligence platform; 2+ years of experience in data analysis; at least 1 year of experience in a project-centric environment or cross-department team; at least 1+ year of experience in programming languages such as Python and R.
Physical and Mental Requirements:
- Regular handling of small fragile computer components and large components weighing more than 100 pounds.
Remote Work:
This position is eligible for a hybrid remote work schedule that is in compliance with the County’s Remote Work Policy and meets the operational and service needs for the position. All County staff must maintain residence within the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Salary Range:
The hiring range for this position is $39.64 - $43.81 per hour (approx. $82,442 - $91,121 per year.) Starting offer is based on applicable education beyond minimum requirements and internal equity. The position also provides excellent benefits including 12 paid holidays, paid vacation and sick leave, health insurance options with employer contribution, employer-paid life insurance, VRS retirement, and continuing education/training opportunities. This is a full time, FLSA exempt position. Internal candidates will receive pay adjustments in accordance with Local Government Personnel Policy, §P-60.
