Job description


The County of San Diego has current openings for Senior Construction Inspector in the Department of General Services.

Interviews will take place the week of February 12th, 2024 and Job Offers will be made February 19th, 2024.

Future Salary Increases

July 2024 - 4.68% increase to base pay (2.75% Across-the-Board + 1.93% Market Increase)

The County encompasses an area of over 4,000 square miles and owns approximately 8.5 million square feet of buildings throughout. The current Capital (new) and Major Maintenance (existing facilities) construction programs total about 300 projects with a value of approximately $1 billion.

Senior Construction Inspectors perform plan checks, issue permits and certificates of occupancy, and inspect the work of general contractors and sub-contractors for compliance with approved plans, specifications, and all applicable codes for new construction and projects in existing County facilities. They also provide quality assurance checks on construction projects and help ensure contractors adhere to acceptable standards. This class provides first-line supervision to Construction Inspectors (currently three personnel) who determine if county building construction work complies with all applicable codes, approved plans, and specifications. The position reports to a Chief or Deputy Director in the Project Management Division (Capital) of DGS.

Senior Construction Inspectors will have a working knowledge of:

  • The California Building Standards Code (Cal. Code Regs., Title 24).
  • American with Disabilities Act (ADA) Standards.
  • Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP) programs.
  • County of San Diego Consolidated Fire Code.
  • Local building, mechanical, plumbing, and electrical codes with demonstrated experience in researching and interpreting codes.
  • Reading and interpreting plans, specifications, submittals, and shop drawings.
  • Methodology, analysis, and interpretation of construction scheduling.
  • All International Building Code (IBC) types of construction and occupancy groups, including energy, seismic, and security requirements.
  • The fundamentals of architectural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and structural systems.
  • Building maintenance techniques and requirements including warranty and guarantee administration.
  • Structural principles, building materials technology, and construction practices and techniques.

SELECTION INTERVIEW DATES

The timeline for this recruitment is outlined below.


  • Interviews, Job Offers and Background Process begin in February 2024. Note: Current County employees may be excluded from additional background screening.
  • Pre-employment Medical Screening: Approximately 3 days following successful background investigation results.
  • Anticipated Start Date: Start date will be based upon successful completion of medical screening or other mutually agreed upon date.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A valid Building Inspector certificate issued by the International Conference of Building Officials (ICBO) and/or the International Code Council (ICC), AND,

  1. One (1) year of experience as a Construction Inspector with the County of San Diego; OR,
  2. Four (4) years of building inspection work enforcing municipal, county, or state building codes for new or remodeled construction projects; OR,
  3. Four (4) years of experience in inspection work requiring the application of construction standards/technology and building codes and interpretation of approved plans and specifications.

CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT


As part of the County of San Diego's pre-employment process, prospective candidates will undergo a background check (including fingerprinting) and a pre-employment medical screening prior to beginning County employment. Additional types of background investigations may be conducted based on the job-related activities of the position. Current County employees may be excluded from this process.
