Job Role Summary
Under General Supervision of the Clinical Laboratory Manager and/or the Laboratory Director, performs waived, moderate, and high complexity CLINICAL LABORATORY procedures as defined in the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act of 1988. The Senior Clinical Laboratory Technologist is a lead position for CLINICAL LABORATORY testing services and serves as an advisor for test performance and technical problems. In addition, this individual may also provide leadership in a Technical, Educational, Informatics or Quality Assurance capacity. They will provide daily direction to other laboratory staff regarding laboratory workload, policies, procedures, and make recommendations to laboratory management for staffing, policies, and procedures. They will coordinate and support staff to ensure quality results are reported in a timely manner and assure that all remedial actions are taken whenever test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications and that patient test results are not reported until all corrective actions have been taken and the test system is properly functioning.
Associated Job Duties

  • Specimen Processing/Testing/ Reporting
  • Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS)/ Senior Clinical Laboratory Technologist will perform the general responsibilities listed below:
  • Takes a secondary role in database administrator of LIMS, software upgrades, and implementation of control table changes to expand/improve LIMS functionality. Coordinate and serve as the department liaison for installation and table build for any new laboratory software system.
  • Coordinate the validation process for new programs or software version changes to ensure accurate display of results and/or information.
  • Ensure that results and information pertaining to results such as methods, units and reference intervals are consistent between all platforms (Laboratory Information System, Test Directory, Insight, etc.).
  • Maintain complete documentation of any LIS changes and report changes to laboratory management.
  • Serve as the CLINICAL LABORATORY liaison with the LIS Support staff. Assist with maintenance of Laboratory Information System operations.
  • Serve as the primary resource for lab staff concerning Laboratory Information Management System issues.
  • Acts as a Test Directory Editor and keep Test Directory up to date. Add or edit tests as directed by the Clinical Laboratory Manager or Lab Director.
  • Work with the Quality Assurance Manager to perform periodic Laboratory Information System checks (e.g., calculation, auto verification, patient reports) or reviews and implement any necessary changes.
  • Organizational skill and ability to prioritize test requests are critical to successful performance. A high degree of accuracy and reliability is required to ensure results that can assist in the timely diagnosis and treatment of patients.
  • Quality Assurance: Performs quality assurance on laboratory testing, include turn-around-time verification, sample evaluation, and others as defined in the Quality Assurance Policy:
  • Assist the Quality Assurance Manager in overseeing quality activities and programs including method and instrument evaluations, quality control processes, materials, documentation, and data analysis in accordance with lab policies and accreditation agencies.
  • Serve as a consultant and coach for method validation or verification studies.
  • Materials Management: Oversees the inventory of supplies and reagents and applies principles of asset management. Ensures that the laboratory has the necessary materials to maintain testing needs.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Operates various complex instruments. Performs preventative maintenance protocols and with minimal assistance, investigates and corrects equipment malfunction.
  • Participate in public health emergency preparedness exercises and response to public health emergencies: as directed.
  • As needed, will travel to other off-site labs to maintain appropriate laboratory staffing: as directed.
  • Participate H.O.P.E. events: minimum of two totaling a minimum of eight (8) hours annually.

Qualifications
1. Have earned a doctoral, master's, or bachelor's degree in chemical, physical, biological or CLINICAL LABORATORY science, or medical technology from an accredited institution (CLIA, 6171) and 3-4 years of experience in an environmental, clinical, or analytical laboratory.
OR
2. Have earned an associate degree in laboratory science, or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution (CLIA, 6171) and 4 years of experience in a CLINICAL LABORATORY performing CLIA Moderate or High complexity testing.
a. Requires a bachelor's degree in chemistry, biology, microbiology, medical technology, or related field, required 3-4 years of experience in an environmental, clinical, or analytical laboratory,
OR
b. Current license/certification as Medical Technologist (ASCP or AMT), Clinical Laboratory Technologist (NCA) or equivalent certification and 4 years of experience in a CLINICAL LABORATORY performing CLIA Moderate or High Complexity testing.
Licenses/Certifications Required
License/Certification required: Medical Technologist (ASCP or AMT), Clinical Laboratory Technologist (NCA) or equivalent certification.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of microbiology, biology, and chemistry.
  • Considerable knowledge of a CLINICAL LABORATORY as it applies to the testing of samples, interpretation of results, and the communication of those results to appropriate personnel.
  • Thorough knowledge of federal and state regulations governing public health and safety programs, and national and state environmental trends and issues.
  • Knowledge of laboratory chemicals and biological safety.
  • Ability to operate computers to include Word, Excel, and other applications.
  • Ability to operate laboratory equipment.
  • Ability to troubleshoot laboratory equipment and processes.
  • Performs technical duties of General Supervisor, as defined by the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act, in the absence of a general supervisor in the department.
  • License/Certification required: Medical Technologist (ASCP or AMT), Clinical Laboratory Technologist (NCA) or equivalent certification.
