Departmental Overview

Responsibilities
The position plays a key role in developing and coordinating a comprehensive recruitment and admission program for student athletes. The incumbent will develop and execute a recruitment strategy that supports the mission and objectives of the University and assesses the effectiveness of the program. They will serve as an expert in the office for athletic admissions issues.

  • Advise prospective student athlete applicants (international, U.S. citizens or permanent residents), faculty and staff regarding admission and transfer credit. Advising may be in person, by e-mail, over Zoom or by telephone. This requires: 1) a sound working knowledge of education systems around the world at the secondary and post-secondary levels, 2) a solid understanding of NCAA requirements, policies, and processes, and 3) the ability to assess a student's educational background, making transfer credit judgments when necessary and then providing the student or their supporting staff with appropriate advising.
  • Advises the general public in person, by telephone, individually or through groups. Provide information on admission policies/procedures, and selection and eligibility requirements for all colleges, schools and major programs. Those advised include prospective and current applicants, continuing and returning students, parents, government officials, faculty and staff from UC campuses and other educational institutions.
  • Participates in general office duties as a member of the management team and related to reading, recruitment, regional management, yield activities and finalization.
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of the student athlete application review, and selection program, considering athletics and admissions goals. Proposes program modifications as necessary; maintain documentation, including historical summaries. Initiate and develop reports as necessary.
  • Provides liaisons with other offices, colleges and schools on campus concerning student athlete issues; especially Intercollegiate Athletics, the Berkeley International Office, and admissions officers at other UC campuses. Provides training on the athletic admission policy and related practices to other internal admission officers as necessary for completion of workload.
  • Assists management in the design and oversees the implementation of the student athlete application review and selection process. Independently plans, initiates and executes the selection process for student athletes. Modifies procedures, in accordance with campus and system-wide policies, as relevant to an applicant's educational structure to ensure that the spirit of campus policies are met. Manages processes to ensure that campus and system wide notification deadlines are met. Monitors admission goals for student athletes.
  • Analyze academic records from secondary and tertiary institutions to determine eligibility and level of competitiveness in the admission pool.
  • Evaluate student athlete records for eligibility (pre-application) and for the selection process (post-application). Exercise judgment about comparability of U.S. and foreign academic credentials, selecting those students who match requirements detailed in both the admissions policy and the athletic admissions policy.
  • Supervises the athletics admissions team. Reviews most difficult and complex admissions cases, provides assistance to experienced admissions specialists. Serve as a resource to all first-year and transfer readers on the review of student athlete records, providing assessment of academic preparation and non-cognitive factors that can help determine both academic and athletic success on campus.
  • Represents the department or campus as it relates to specialist's specific area of expertise and provides guidance to other specialists in that area of expertise, such as athletics admissions. Acts as a resource for all staff and campus colleagues who are interested in student athletes and related policies.
  • Through various venues: public presentations, one-on-one meetings, written informational brochures, web site information, etc., represents the office, campus or college/school/department as it relates to undergraduate admissions and student athlete admissions and provides guidance to other specialists in that area of expertise. Represent the campus to many interested parties-applicants and their families, high school and community college counselors, high-level government officials, potential donors, recruited athletes and representatives of Intercollegiate Athletics.
  • Professional development: Incumbent must stay current on changing educational systems and policies. Identify professional development activities that would enhance incumbent's skills, knowledge and or experience. These may include NCAA, PACRAO, AACRAO, UC Senior Evaluator conference, WACAC, NACAC, Counselor Conference, Ensuring Transfer Success workshops etc.
Required Qualifications
  • Advanced knowledge of student athlete admissions and circumstances which may affect student athletes, including trends in NCAA policies and practices.
  • Cultural competency and experience working with a diverse student population.
  • Advanced and comprehensive knowledge of academic programs, including curricula, admissions requirements, and financial aid programs, at colleges/universities.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with schools, universities, community organizations and other institutions.
  • Advanced knowledge of admissions requirements for campus/school/college, including mitigating circumstances/bases for exceptions.
  • Ability to determine eligibility for first year and transfer admission and the level of applicant's competitiveness relative to the system of instruction and overall pool to the Berkeley campus.
  • Advanced knowledge of applicable rules and standards of the athletic conference, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) as well as other associations and agencies to which the Berkeley campus of the University of California adheres, and, at all times avoid any and all violations of these rules and standards, especially as pertaining to athletic recruits.
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of UC Berkeley, and the ability to interpret policies and procedures to prospective students and the public.
  • Strong knowledge of tertiary level academic credentials, secondary school records, study abroad programs and policies, and the knowledge of major educational systems of the world.
  • Knowledgeable about Office of the President, Board of Admission and Relations with Schools, the Berkeley campus' Admissions Enrollment & Preparatory Education Committee; the
  • Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
  • Base knowledge of project management including program design, implementation, and evaluation.
  • Master's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Bilingual capabilities preferred, Spanish a plus

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.
The budgeted salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $92,650-$109,000
  • This is a 100% full-time (40 hours per week), career position that is eligible for full UC benefits.
  • This position is exempt and paid monthly.
  • This is a remote-friendly position, eligible for 40% remote capability
