Ojai is a tourism destination known for its boutique hotels, recreation opportunities, hiking, and farmers’ market of local organic agriculture. The city’s self-styled nickname is “Shangri-La” referencing the natural environment of this health and spiritually focused region as well as the mystical sanctuary of the 1937 film adaption of James Hilton’s novel “Lost Horizon.” Chain stores are prohibited by city ordinance to encourage local small business development and keep the town unique. The city has a village-like center dotted with art galleries and New Age shops. Ojai’s culture is heavily focused on ecology, health, organic agriculture, walking/hiking, spirituality, music, and local art. Located in Ventura County with Los Angeles 80 miles to the south and Santa Barbara 33 miles to the north it is set in a valley of the Topatopa Mountains. Nearby to the south is Oxnard with its Channel Islands, grand hotels, and Port Hueneme’s sport fishing port and beach city. To the north is Los Padres National Forest which is crisscrossed with meandering trails and Lake Casitas which offers camping, picnicking, hiking, boating, fishing, and a water park. The city’s recreational program offers soccer, softball, football, basketball, tennis, volleyball, exercise programs, and many other classes. Every year the city hosts the Ojai Music Festival, the Ojai Playwrights Conference, the Ojai Tennis Tournament (The oldest tennis tournament-founded in 1896-west of the Mississippi River), the Garrett Lemire bicycle race, and the Ojai Wine Festival. Ojai has been described as a tiny tourist town; a spiritual center; a laid-back enclave; a place to find your new moment; a place where precious memories are made and renewed and where life itself is renewed.
