The City of Berkeley invites you to apply for the position of Senior Aquatics Specialist (Non-Career Intermittent) in the Parks, Recreation and Waterfront Department! In this role, you will have the opportunity to provide instruction in swim and serve as a lifeguard at assigned swimming facilities. You'll teach swim skills at all levels and supervise the conduct of swimmers in order to maintain health and safety standards.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
A typical way of gaining the knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position is:
A minimum of two (2) summer/seasons in lifeguard or swim-instruction experience in the organized recreational or educational program dealing with swim instruction, lifeguarding, or coaching.
Other requirements include possession of a valid Water Safety Instruction card which requires an Advanced Life-Saving Certificate and successful completion of first-aid and CPR training.

EXAM PROCESS
The exam process will include, but may not be limited to:
  • Application review for minimum qualifications
  • Review of Supplemental Questionnaire

Tests may consist of any combination of written, oral or other exercises or assessment procedures that test content and may include, but are not necessarily limited to, typing, math, reading, writing and analytical skills; problem solving ability; computer and software proficiency, or any other job-related knowledge, skill, ability or qualification. The City may, without notice, change or eliminate any assessment component as needs dictate. Applicants passing all examination phases will have their names placed on an employment eligible list that hiring departments will use to conduct final selection interviews.

PRE-EMPLOYMENT PROCESS

DISASTER SERVICE WORKER
All City employees are required to provide services as Disaster Service Workers in the event of an emergency/disaster.

ELIGIBILITY
City employees with a regular work schedule of at least 20 hours per week are eligible for benefits. Those working less than full-time may receive pro-rated benefits.
RETIREMENT
CalPERS
City employees are included in the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS). The retirement formula is 2% at age 62 or 2.7% at age 55 depending on your eligibility, and you will be vested in CalPERS after 5 years of full-time service.
For Police and Fire, the retirement formula is 2.7% at age 57 or 3% at age 50 depending on your eligibility.
SRIP
The City contributes 6.7% of your salary (up to a maximum) into a 401(a) Supplemental Retirement Income Plan account (SRIP). The City is not a member of Social Security, therefore only the Medicare portion is deducted from employees' salaries.
DEFERRED COMPENSATION
We offer a voluntary deferred compensation 457 plan with your choice of three providers. You can defer up to $22,500 of your salary per year on a pre-tax basis, with higher maximum deferrals for those who are approaching retirement age.
MEDICAL PLANS
You can choose between a Kaiser HMO Plan and a Sutter Health Plus Plan. The City contributes up to the full premium for the Kaiser HMO Plan. Employees in the Sutter Health Plus Plan contribute a small portion of the premium. If you have medical coverage under another plan, you can choose to waive City-provided medical coverage and receive a monthly stipend.
DENTAL PLAN
We provide group dental benefits through Delta Dental Plan of California. The City contributes up to the full premium for family coverage and the plan pays for 90% of your dental charges up to an annual maximum. If you have dental coverage under another plan, you can choose to waive City-provided dental coverage and receive a monthly stipend.
LIFE INSURANCE
The City provides a basic Life Insurance and Accidental Death & Dismemberment policy; coverage amounts vary based on Union Agreements. You will also have the option to purchase additional term life insurance up to a maximum of $300,000.
SICK LEAVE
You will accrue twelve days of paid sick leave annually.
VACATION
Vacation accruals start at two weeks per year and increase with additional years of service according to your Union Agreement.
HOLIDAYS
The City recognizes thirteen regular holidays and three floating holidays annually.
ADMINISTRATIVE LEAVE
Certain classifications that are not eligible for paid overtime receive 50 hours of Administrative Leave annually.
LONG-TERM DISABILITY
We provide long-term disability insurance that provides partial income replacement in the event of disability.
RETIREE MEDICAL COVERAGE
When you retire, the City will pay a portion of the medical premiums for you and your eligible spouse or domestic partner based upon your years of service. To be eligible, you must be at least age 55 and have at least 8 years of CalPERS service with the City.
YMCA MEMBERSHIP
We pay 75% of the YMCA membership fee for most employees. If you choose to join, you'll pay for the remainder of the fee.
TRANSIT SUBSIDY
We provide a free free Eco-pass for AC Transit and an IRC 132(f) plan that allows you to set aside pre-tax income to pay for public transportation expenses. The City contributes $20 per month to the plan.
