We are looking for a highly detailed oriented professional to be responsible for the accounting functions in our Finance & Accounting Department at our Mechanical and Plumbing contractor in Sterling, Virginia. Senior Accountant I - Construction
Responsibilities:
1. Financial Reporting:
- Prepare and analyze financial statements in compliance with accounting principles.
- Generate reports detailing financial performance and variance analysis.
2. Budgeting and Forecasting:
- Assist in the development of budgets and financial forecasts.
- Monitor and analyze budget-to-actual variances.
3. Project Accounting:
- Oversee project accounting activities, including cost tracking and revenue recognition.
- Collaborate with project managers to ensure accurate project financials.
4. General Ledger Management:
- Maintain the integrity of the general ledger.
- Reconcile accounts and resolve discrepancies.
5. Compliance:
- Ensure compliance with accounting standards and regulations.
- Assist in audits and provide necessary documentation.
6. Taxation:
- Support in the preparation of tax returns and compliance.
- Stay updated on tax regulations impacting the construction industry.
7. Process Improvement:
- Identify opportunities for process improvement in accounting procedures.
- Implement best practices to enhance efficiency.
8. Cross-Functional Collaboration:
- Collaborate with other departments, such as operations and procurement, to gather necessary financial information.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
- CPA designation is often preferred.
- Several years of experience in accounting, with a focus on the construction industry.
- Proficiency in accounting software and Microsoft Excel.
- Strong understanding of construction accounting principles.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
- Proficient with accounting software.
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Must be able to lift 15 pounds at times.
PREFERRED PROFESSIONAL SKILLS
- 3+ years’ accounting experience in the construction industry
- Understanding OCIP and CCIP documentation
- Ability to interpret contract language to ensure accuracy in billing

EDUCATION
