The Finance team performs the accounting functions for the National Friends of the Children chapters throughout the country. The Senior Accountant is responsible for developing and maintaining accounting principles, practices, and procedures to ensure accurate and timely financial statements. The position addresses tight deadlines and a multitude of accounting activities including general ledger preparation and review, accounts payable review, financial reporting, year-end audit preparation, and the support of budget and forecast activities.

This role is a full-time remote position for the National organization that is based in Portland, Oregon.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Prepare monthly financial statements and other reporting for executives, the Board of Directors, committees, and grants.
  • Support budgeting and planning activities.
  • Monitor quarterly and annual tasks to ensure clean and timely year-end audits for National and support chapter audits
  • Provide documents and support as needed to external auditors for year-end audits and tax returns.
  • Monitor and analyze department work to develop more efficient procedures and use of resources, while maintaining a high level of accuracy in a fast-paced expanding business model.
  • Prepare as well as review deposits, journal entries, and reconciliations prepared by Staff Accountant.
  • Maintain fixed assets ledger.
  • Learn the most critical aspects of the Staff Accountant role to provide essential coverage during absences.
  • Review grant documents and monitor compliance across the organization with established rules and regulations.

Required Education, Experience, and Abilities:

  • 3-5 years of financial accounting or audit accounting experience
  • Active CPA license
  • Non-profit accounting experience
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills
  • Strong GAAP/internal controls knowledge
  • Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality
  • Highly organized and efficient in completing various projects with overlapping deadlines
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) and editing of PDF files.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with members of staff

Preferred Experience and Abilities:

  • Experience with Financial Edge and Asset Keeper
  • Experience with Payroll reporting (using TriNet, Paychex, Insperity or similar system)
  • Experience in supporting multiple business entities simultaneously
  • Proficient in Microsoft Teams
  • Proficient in Teamwork
  • Experience with expense reporting and management software

Compensation:

  • Salary Range: $72k-$85k (Compensation commensurate with experience and geographical location)
