Job Description
Your Team
The Senior Accountant is responsible for completing monthly accounting, job cost management and financial reporting for selected land/housing projects and their related entities. The Senior Accountant will also critically evaluate on-going performance, efficiency, reporting, and internal controls for both operations and finance. These responsibilities are carried out both through completion of specific tasks. He/She has developed an understanding of the accounting procedures and internal controls and produces accurate and timely accounting reports and financial statements (including Joint Venture reporting). He/She works independently and uses their judgement to complete their work and works on more complex accounting. He/She will work with others on various projects, as well as through directing and supervising staffs who are responsible for completing those specific tasks.
Your Key Deliverables
The Senior Accountant is responsible for day-to-day accounting functions and ensuring all transactions are recorded and reported accurately, timely and completely, as well as ensuring adherence to budget and expenditures in accordance with corporate's accounting policies and procedures. The Senior Accountant acts as a key liaison between operations staff, Head Office and the Division Accounting department to ensure this mandate is delivered. Specific tasks include, but are not limited to:
  • Able to problem solve and give recommendations for process changes or improvements in a fast paces environment.
  • Record /calculate sales and cost of sales, as needed
  • Record land acquisition and any PAPA accruals
  • Monitor, record and reconcile cash activity through the online banking system, wire transfers, stop payments, etc.
  • Track property taxes and prepare payments
  • Submit loan draws and joint venture capital calls, as necessary
  • Prepare billings of sales & reimbursements
  • Prepare entries for consolidation and elimination
  • Reconcile g/l accounts
  • Reconcile and prepare entries for working capital
  • Prepare month-end closing entries
  • Work with internal departments with regards to purchase orders, change orders, budgets, paid to dates, reclasses
  • New vendor /employee setup
  • Special projects as assigned (creating procedures, forms, templates, reconciliations)
  • Able to problem solve and give recommendations for process changes or improvements in a fast paces environment.
All SOX and compliance issues are managed and governed by the Asst Controller/Director of Accounting. Coordination of all SOX compliance and internal control issues for the Division is administered by the Senior Accountant. The specific tasks include:
  • Through regular internal control and audit assessments and day-to-day monitoring, evaluate all current policies and procedures to ensure proper and effective internal controls are in place. When required, implement improvements to current practices. For new procedures, ensure proper internal controls are established up front prior to new processes being implemented
  • Provide ongoing review and evaluation of process documentation.
  • Liaise with compliance auditors as required, and provide requested information and respond to queries, as necessary
  • Clearly communicate business processes to facilitate better understanding for the audit team.
The Senior Accountant plays a significant role in monitoring, interpreting, and communicating operating results of their Division, and is responsible for the financial reporting as well as the analysis of results for the Division by ensuring accurate and timely preparation of monthly, They will support and respond timely to the requests and needs of Finance, Operation, Executive team, Corporate and Joint Venture partners. Specific tasks include, but are not limited to:
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly and year-end working papers including full balance sheet reconciliation, ledger and sub-ledger journal entries, supporting financial and operational statements, and any required variance analysis
  • Maintain the integrity of the land development budgets by verifying accuracy between LandDev, accounting system and department budget reports
  • Prepare business, tax or income tax filings
  • Prepare reports or corporate packs on a timely basis and verify the accuracy
  • Prepare analysis of various general ledger accounts.
  • Maintain, creates or improve reports using InformXL or Spreadsheet Server based upon the needs of accounting or operations. He/She will keep their excel skills current based upon the needs of the position.
  • Respond to other departments requests and needs with excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Attend and/or lead sections of department meetings as it relates to billings, collections, financial reporting and special projects.
  • Contribute to adhoc projects, training and developing within the team.

Must Haves
  • Bachelor’s degree highly preferred or has or is pursuing an accounting designation and should possess 5-7 years’ experience, or an equivalent mix of education and experience
  • Relevant land and/or homebuilding accounting experience is preferred
  • Proven experience in financial reporting and working paper preparation, full-cycle and job cost accounting
  • Developing business acumen and willingness to learn about the business
  • Exceptional work ethic and goal oriented
  • Self-motivated, comfortable taking initiative, attention to detail and possesses superior organizational skills
  • The ability to work efficiently, note taking, and effectively to meet deadlines and work with multiple departments/managers and assignments simultaneously
  • Advanced in with Microsoft Suite, including Excel, Word and Outlook.
