Description
Semi-Automatic Welders use an automatic electric arc welding machine to weld a variety of standard and repetitive parts. Semi-Automatic Welders may change fixtures, adjust, and regulate the machines in accordance with job instructions. This position works in a cellular environment and follows a defined path of standardized work. Responsibilities include preparation of parts, welding, grinding, painting, labeling and bundling or crating pipe for the customer. Semi-Automatic Welders must have the ability to use a rule, square, templates and gages in addition to a strong knowledge of welding principles and techniques. Willingness to perform a variety of duties and cross train is essential.
Requirements
ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
- Operates equipment in a safe manner and uses safe work habits.
- Prepares all material surfaces to be welded ensuring that there is no loose or thick scale, slag, rust, moisture, grease, or other foreign matter.
- Removes rough spots from work pieces using portable grinders, hand files, or scrapers.
- Cleans or degreases parts sing a wire brush, portable grinder or chemical bath.
- Welds steel components with welding equipment as specified by procedures, layouts, blueprints, diagrams, work orders, or oral instructions.
- Monitors the fitting, burning and welding processes to avoid overheating of parts or warping, shrinking, distortion or expansion of material.
- Fills holes, cuts, contours, and bevels metal to dimensions as specified by blueprints, layouts, work orders and templates.
- Examines work pieces for defects including use of weld gages or tape measures to ensure conformance with specifications.
- Chips or grinds off excess weld, slag, or spatter using hand scrapers, portable grinders, or arc-cutting equipment.
- Uses a paint gun to spray primer paint and gloss onto parts.
- Recognizes visual defects prior to painting and work with supervision to remedy basic quality issues.
- Loads pipe into the furnace for baking.
- Labels all painted pipe with the appropriate labels for the job order.
- Loads pipe and parts into a crate, places on a cart, or bundles for shipment to the customer.
- Potentially operates forklifts, cranes, hoists, slings, grinders, cutting torches, hand tools, drills, punches, and instruments of measurements as appropriate for the assigned work.
- Uses a computer to access job information and accurately clock work transactions.
- Assist with cleaning of the paint booth including changing paint filters and additional booth maintenance.
- Maintain a safe and clean working environment including complying with safety procedures, rules, and regulations.
- Willingness to cross train and perform the work of other job tasks when necessary.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- A high school diploma or GED with a minimum of one-year production welding experience, either on-the-job or formal classroom training, required
- Basic mathematical skills such as addition, subtraction, fractions and decimals
- Ability to perform precise measurements using a tape measure, square and weld gages
- Basic computer skills required to accurately gather and input data from computer systems
- Capability to lift 50 lbs with regularity and up to 70 lbs occasionally
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Preference given to candidates with experience using Flux Core and MIG weld wire
- Aptitude to read and interpret blueprints and weld specifications
- Experience with jib cranes and sitting forklifts preferred, but not required
- Candidates with wet spray-painting experience preferred, but not required
