Job Opening and Application Details

Applications are being accepted for Marine PatrolDeck Hand for the Linn County Sheriff's Office.  Duties include assisting the Marine Patrol Deputy in enforcement of boating laws and ordinances, investigation of boating accidents, water based search, rescue and recovery operations, identification and/or removal of navigational hazards, and addressing vessel operation.
 
The position is a seasonal, temporary position to fill a contract with the Oregon State Marine Board. Typically this position will work from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend time periods (late May through early September).  Position duration is subject to change.

Job Classification Specifications

MANDATORY QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • 18 years of age at time of hire.
  • Applicant must be a U.S. Citizen
  • Applicant must pass criminal background investigation and psychological evaluation.
  • Must possess valid driver's license with acceptable driving record.
  • Must possess or earn an Oregon Boating Safety Card. (Sheriff's Office can proctor the exam to hired employee.)
  • Must possess or earn First Aid/CPR with AED certification. (Sheriff's Office can certify hired employee.)
  • Must be able to pass a swimming test consisting of a 100 meter swim, treading water for 5 minutes, float for 5 minutes, and hold breath underwater for 30 seconds, consecutively.  This will be administered by the Sheriff's Office as part of the hiring process.
  • Must be able to work on unstable platforms such as docks and moving boats in a variety of environmental conditions such as adverse weather.
  • Must have good verbal communication skills and the ability to interact with individuals in a variety of situations.
  • The ability to drive a vehicle with a boat in tow and be able to back up a trailer is highly desirable.

Job Requirements

This is a non-sworn position. The successful applicant will not have law enforcement authority upon hiring. The position is to assist a certified Deputy Sheriff in the execution of his/her duties as a Marine Patrol Deputy. This work requires frequent lifting, maneuvering in, around, and on watercraft of all shapes and sizes, and carrying light to heavy loads. Work will be conducted in all types of weather conditions. Standard work hours will be 4 -10 hour shifts, either Thursday through Sunday or Friday through Monday from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm, however, this position OFTEN requires additional hours, based on the call load, with little or no notice. The days and hours may vary at times.  Holidays will be worked depending on assigned days off (no Holiday differential pay is offered). The nature of the position involves exposure to health and safety risks on a continuous basis. Personal protective equipment and training will be provided to mitigate these risks.

  • Oral Board Interview 
  • Applicants chosen to move forward will be administered a swim test at a local area swimming pool.  Specifics are listed above.
  • Top candidates will be given a Conditional Job Offer, and go through a thorough criminal background investigation.
  • After completion of the background investigation, successful applicants will have an interview with the Sheriff and Criminal Captain, as well as, complete the Psychological Assessment and pre-employment urinalysis.
