This is a non-exempt, full-time position with office assignment at the Headquarters of the International Association of Fire Fighters in Washington D.C. Position Summary:
Oversees and provides subject matter expertise to all science and research operations at the IAFF, including, but not limited to, scientific and medical literature research and interpretation, research protocol development and oversight, occupational health standards, and member assistance. This position will collaborate directly with external researchers to ensure IAFF members have access to high quality, evidence-based, and culturally competent information. Further, it will verify and validate research and medical evidence and prepare related reports, manuscripts, and presentations.
Responsibilities:
• Develop, track, and monitor all Health, Safety & Medicine Division's research projects.
• Assist with medical record and workers compensation review.
• Draft letters of causation/support for workers' compensation cases.
• Assist with the development of workers' compensation testimony.
• Assist with health and safety legislative and presumptive efforts.
• Perform literature review and peer review evaluation of new research.
• Perform critical review of existing medical literature.
• Coordinate the development of research summaries, position papers, safety alerts, etc.
• Coordinate efforts to secure grant funding to complete projects identified by the IAFF.
• Coordinate tracking and monitoring of fire fighter research projects conducted around the world.
• Develop, present, and/or assist with delivery of research presentations at IAFF conferences, fire service symposia and related events.
• Attend meetings and conferences with and on behalf of the Science and Research Department to represent the IAFF and provide advocacy for its members.
• Provide quality assurance review and editing of outreach materials, presentations, and campaigns delivered by internal/external partners to IAFF affiliates and/or fire service audiences.
• Provide technical assistance and dissemination of best practices on health and safety topics.
• When applicable, work directly with researchers to complete research projects.
• Develop and oversee related budgets.
• Review and/or compose contracts with external researchers and/or organizations.
• Compile and manage departmental and membership data.
• Travel as required to perform required duties.
• Perform other duties as required to support the Department and its mission.
• Perform other duties as assigned by IAFF leadership.
Skills:
• Strong foundation with designing and interpreting research.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Excellent organizational skills.
• Knowledge of health and safety topics preferred.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
• Knowledge of labor unions or other advocacy organizations preferred.
• Ability to critically analyze information and make sound logical conclusions.
• Knowledge of occupational and workplace risks to fire fighters preferred.
• Working knowledge of human physiology, pathophysiology and medicine preferred.
• Familiarity with workers' compensation schemes and related legislation.
• Comfortable with public speaking in various settings.
Qualifications:
• Bachelor's, master's, or doctorate degree in a science field preferred.
• 5 years of relevant work experience preferred.
