As a unit within the Office of College and Career Success, the Office of School Counseling and Postsecondary Advising (OSCPA) aims to ensure that School Counseling teams implement comprehensive, student-centered, data-informed practices through an effective model of leadership, collaboration, advocacy, and systemic change to impact academic, social/emotional, and postsecondary outcomes of ALL students in the district.
Job Summary:
The School Counseling Intern will provide general project and administrative assistance to the Office of School Counseling and Postsecondary Advising (OSCPA). The School Counseling Intern will assist CPS School Counselors in providing programs and services that will positively impact student achievement while exposing the School Counseling Intern to evidence-based academic, social/emotional, and college and career programming within CPS. This role reports to the CPS Site School Counseling Supervisor.
This part-time/temporary position will be compensated for time worked on an hourly basis. The work schedule for this role will consist of an estimated 20 hours per week for an anticipated period of 9 months beginning August 22, 2022 and ending June 7, 2023. Due to the part-time/temporary nature of this work, this is not a benefit-eligible position.
The part-time/temporary School Counseling Intern will be held accountable for the following responsibilities:

  • Creating and coordinating the implementation of tiered interventions for students
  • Leading small group interventions
  • Providing individual counseling
  • Facilitates workshops and classroom lessons on the counseling curriculum
  • Assists school counselors in the development and maintenance of an effective School Counseling program consistent with the school's mission and goals as mandated by ASCA, school board policy, and the Office of School Counseling and Postsecondary Advising
  • Provides services to students in the areas of academic, social/emotional, and postsecondary development.
  • Reviews school data for evidence that the School Counseling program is meeting the academic, social/emotional, and postsecondary needs of all students.
  • Interprets student data and initiates related student programs.
  • Supports teacher/parent communication and community involvement.
  • Assists students in conflict resolution.
  • With the support of the site, the supervisor manages crises and follows appropriate protocols as outlined by the CPS Crisis Management Unit.
  • Refers students to intervention/remediation programs, as well as academic and alternative programs, to ensure academic success and personal well-being.
  • Refers students to appropriate school personnel and community agencies.
  • Attend meetings (i.e., BHT, IEP, and 504 meetings).
  • Participates in parent/teacher conferences.
  • Serves as a resource for school personnel and parents.
  • Follow all required procedures and practices.
  • Engage in weekly professional supervision and consultation which will inform the School Counseling Site Supervisor, School Counseling department chair, and/or Principal of any concerns and/or problems encountered.
  • Attends district, network, and association (ISCA, ASCA, etc.) counselor meetings and professional development activities
  • Performs other related work as required.

In order to be successful and achieve the above responsibilities, the part-time/temporary School Counseling Intern must possess the following qualifications:
Education Required:
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university
    • Or have completed relevant coursework in School Counseling from an accredited college or university, as well as school-based practicum experiences.
  • In order to be eligible for an internship within Chicago Public Schools, there must be a University Agreement in place between CPS and the prospective university.

Experience Required:
  • Minimum of 1 year of professional working experience in any environment (school, retail, office)
  • Google Suite experience is preferred

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Strong communication skills (speaking - including presentations - listening, and writing)
  • Ability to build collaborative relationships with a variety of constituents, including families educators, school leaders, and community members, to support a comprehensive School Counseling program
  • Ability to define problems, analyze data, and support the implementation of appropriate School Counseling interventions
  • Ability to clearly communicate and present in a professional environment is preferred
  • Ability to keep detailed records is preferred

Conditions of Employment
As a condition of employment with the Chicago Public Schools (CPS), employees are required to:
  • Establish/Maintain Chicago Residency - Employees are required to live within the geographic boundaries of the City of Chicago within six months of their CPS hire date and maintain residency throughout their employment with the district. The Chicago residency requirement does not apply to temporary/part-time positions, however, all CPS employees must be residents of Illinois.
  • Be Fully Vaccinated Against COVID-19 - Unless approved for a medical or religious exemption, all employees are required to be up-to-date on COVID-19 vaccinations, including boosters, and to submit proof of vaccination to the district within 30 days of hire. "Up-to-date" on vaccination is defined as being at least two weeks past all primary vaccine doses and any applicable boosters.

Part-Time: 20hrs per week (flexible) (Maximum of 1200 total hours)
Timeframe: 9 months (flexible) - Tentative August start date
Pay: $13 p/hour
