This position requires the ability to work in the Salem, MA office.

This position advises lenders on the Small Business Administration (SBA) loan rules and regulations, processes loans through E Tran, and prepares both the loan authorization and, at times, the closing documents. The person in this role works closely with the Community Business Banking Team and other commercial loan officers in structuring, approving, and closing SBA loans, as well as handles liquidations and a small portfolio. 

Additionally, The Senior CBB Underwriter is a credit professional responsible for the underwriting function of the CBB program, specifically utilizing the Baker Hill Origination software.  The CBB Underwriter applies sound decision making to underwrite businesses that contribute to a profitable and healthy portfolio.  The position has oversight responsibilities for underwriting functions of CBB and any junior CBB underwriters as added to the team. 

The Senior CBB Underwriter conducts detailed research on the financial history of businesses and individuals to determine their creditworthiness, adequacy of repayment resources and collateral. They review and verify income statements, tax returns and other financial documents to develop a borrower's profile and arrive at a credit recommendation, per Bank product guidelines and loan policies and procedures. Decisions made on issuing new loans or lines of credit are, in part, based on the credit underwriter’s recommendation. The CBB underwriter works closely with loan officers and may assist them with verifying the accuracy of loan applications, in addition to working with CBB team members in a collaborative environment.  CBB underwriter may also propose revisions to the credit limits or interest rates on the existing loans of qualified borrowers.  Credit underwriting for Community Business Banking as well as potential Middle Market accounts may also be required (time permitting), in addition to some reporting responsibilities. 

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to the following:  

  • As the SBA Officer, has expert knowledge of all SBA rules and regulations and is proficient with the SBA’s online applications and reporting solutions to include, but not limited to, Etran.
  • Performs underwriting and annual reviews on all Community Business Banking loans, specifically SBA loans, in accordance with State Regulatory guidelines and Salem Five’s policies and procedures.
  • Approves, administers and reviews loans and loan commitments to ensure that they adhere to existing policy guidelines and that documentation is adequate to ensure security of collateral, both in relation to Salem Five policy and SBA rules/regulations.
  • Examines for adequacy and completeness, loan documentation on a wide variety of Community Business Banking loans and loan commitments.
  • Approve or reject Community Business Banking loans, ensuring that the credits adhere to existing credit guidelines and that applicants are deemed credit worthy.
  • Administers and reviews existing credits to protect the quality and profitability of the loan portfolio.
  • Identifies potential problem loans.
  • Supervises input data/usage of SBA loan application software and credit scoring module, as well as analyze output and recommend decisions.
  • Demonstrates compliance with banking business laws and regulations as defined in company policies and procedures pertinent to the position.
  • Provide outstanding Customer Experience to Salem Five customers and prospects, when required.
  • Proficient with utilizing desktop applications such as MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and the Internet to search and locate information.
  • Ensures the effective coordination of the commercial loan closing process. Verifying accuracy of notes with facility report and commitment letter, as related to SBA.

Education and/or Experience:

Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) from four-year college or university; or six to ten years of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.  Formal credit training and prior SBA lending experience are required.
