Sanitation Specialist

This position is for a passionate individual responsible for reinforcing a culture of food safety, good housekeeping and cleanliness.The principal responsibility of the Sanitation Specialist is to perform proper cleaning and maintenance at the Salt & Straw Central Kitchen following Company requirements.
Salt & Straw is a small batch, handmade ice cream company based in Portland, Oregon. We created this company because we love to create great neighborhood places, which means supporting local businesses, artisans, schools, and taking care of our team. Our ice cream is a reflection of the local community, so our entire menu is written using local ingredients and collaborating with a diverse assortment of farmers, chefs, cheese-makers, brewers, and butchers from all over Oregon.
Our kitchen is a crazy fun combination of high end pastry making and lean-focused manufacturing. Our head chef, Tyler Malek, has won multiple awards in the food industry including Forbes 30 Under 30, and Eater’s Young Guns Finalists. On top of that, our kitchen team is constantly working with the best chefs in the world for inspiration, training, and collaboration.
QualificationsEssential Functions:
Detailed sanitation and up-keep of the facility, ensuring that all processing equipment is properly cleaned and sanitized.
Removal of all trash and product/soil from plant; cleaning of floors, walls, and ceilings.
Clean all tabletops and surfaces.
Ensure that all kitchen floors are cleaned and scrubbed on a daily basis.
Clean other kitchen equipment on a daily basis, or as needed.
Follow daily sanitation schedules and achieve specified goals.
Follow good sanitation practices and HACCP training, along with Company pre-requisite programs, SOPs, and SSOPs.
Follow directions from the Quality Assurance Team, Production Leads, and Sanitation Supervisor; duties to be directed by all.
Follow all Sanitation Equipment tool and equipment guidelines.
Wear specified Company provided protective gear at all times.

Qualifications: To perform the job successfully, an individual should have the following qualifications:
Previous experience in Sanitation in a Food Production and Manufacturing environment.
Knowledge of GMPs, SSOPs, Food Safety and Sanitation Procedures.
Knowledge of chemical usage, PPE and regulations.
Knowledge and Critical Skills:
Fluency in English: reading, writing, speaking is required.
Spanish speaking as a second-language is preferred.
Decision making/problem solving skills and listening skills.
Knowledge of sanitation equipment and tools.
Ability to read and understand Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
Able to work independently.
Ability to handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
Ability to handle difficult and/or sensitive situations.
Willing to learn and adhere to proper procedures in safety when working with moving machinery.
Willing to accept change and work in a team-based environment.
Willingness and flexibility to take on new duties or reassigned duties and responsibilities to this job at any time.

Frequent lifting of less than 25 lbs.
Occasional lifting of up to 40 lbs.

Work is in a bright, well-lit room.
The work environment is loud 35% due to the equipment cleaning.
Work in a cold environment 35% of the time.
Exposure to chemical cleaning solutions (chlorine, acid and detergents) and adherence to safety protocols with these chemicals.
