Sanitation Equipment Operator I

This is an entry-level position that combines manual work and training in the operation of Sanitation Equipment in the collection of garbage within Madison County. Rear loading and automated refuse equipment are used in the collection of garbage from private homes and business establishments on an assigned route. Requires frequent heavy lifting and occasional exposure to bad weather conditions. Work is reviewed through observation and reports by the route supervisor.
(All duties listed may not be included in any one position nor does the list include all tasks found in a position of this class.)

• Operates packing device on the truck to compress garbage; rides rear platform of the truck to pick-up locations.
• Assists with clean-up and minor maintenance on the truck at end of the workday.
• Assists driver in backing and turning, and assumes duties of a driver in the absence of the Driver.
• Assists in training new employees.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with property owners and other employees.
• Performs related work as required.
• Position may require work to be performed on weekends and holidays as necessary.

Education and Experience

• High School graduation or possession of a GED certificate; and experience in driving a heavy-duty truck; or a combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates the listed knowledge skills and abilities.

Knowledge, Skill, and Ability

• Some knowledge of the methods of refuse collection.
• Ability to perform heavy manual work, often under adverse weather conditions.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with property owners and other employees.
• Ability to understand written and oral instructions.
• Must be able to read and write the English language.
• Must be able to communicate professionally and effectively with employees and supervisors, both by radio and in person.
