SUMMARY:
Hachette Book Group is looking for an energetic, organized, and passionate Sales Director to join the team. The dual reporting role will specifically manage North American sales for
  • Mobius and Laurence King, reporting to the UK based International Sales Director
  • and for Paperblanks, reporting to the Ireland based CEO
Managing a US based marketing and publicity team of 3, you will work closely with both Hachette Book Group sales team and Chronicle Books USA, to drive sales across these three lists.
Mobius is a publishing division owned and operated by Hachette UK but based in the Hachette Book Group New York office. Mobius takes the very best books from across HUK’s lists (approx 80-100 titles per year) and markets, publicizes, and sells them in the US and Canada. This role involves working with UK editorial and rights teams to curate the list of titles, support them with marketing and publicity campaigns, ensure the US based sales team have everything they need for sell in and provide an excellent level of author care. Mobius titles are sold in the US and Canada by Hachette Book Group.
Laurence King Publishing is one of the world’s leading publishers of books and gifts on the creative arts. LKP titles and products are distributed in the US via Chronicle Book Group (approx 100 titles/products a year). This role involves managing our relationship with Chronicle and liaising with the UK based marketing and publicity teams to deliver marketing and publicity campaigns for the priority titles and product in the US, selling in Chronicle titles to the US and CAN, and planning and attending relevant trade shows.
Paperblanks®, introduced in 1992, is one of the biggest brands of high-quality journals and planners, renowned for its exceptional craftsmanship and unique designs enriched with historical and cultural artwork. A stationer with a long history in bookbinding design, the company is driven by professionals passionate about the written word and the critical role of blank books in the art of writing. Owned by Hachette UK and headquartered in Dublin, Ireland, Paperblanks adds a distinctive European flair to its brand identity. The products are highly sought after for personal journalling, sketching, and as thoughtful gifts. This role involves responsibility for developing and executing strategic sales plans to expand the brand's market presence and drive revenue growth, focusing on both existing and new markets. Focus on ensuring alignment with the company's unique brand identity and commitment to quality in the high-end journal and planner market is also a priority.
Managing a team of 3 you will need to be organized, capable of working across 3 publishing lists, with different sales teams that have different processes and systems. You will need to manage a wide range of relationships including, your direct reports, the US sales teams at HBG and Chronicle, UK based editors, marketeers and publicists and of course – authors. Ultimately, the main responsibility is to deliver sales for Paperblanks, Mobius and Laurence King in the US and Canada.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Manage sales and profitability of Paperblanks, Mobius and Laurence King in the US and Canada
  • With your team, prioritize the lists and deliver effective marketing and publicity campaigns for the key titles and products
  • Be the main Paperblanks and Laurence King contact for Chronicle Books and build and maintain strong relationships with the Chronicle Books sales and distribution teams, regularly communicate all updates to sales teams
  • Be the main Mobius contact in the US and UK, ensuring a strong relationship with UK editors and rights teams and the US based client services team
  • Present Paperblanks, Mobius and Laurence King at US sales conferences and ensure the respective sales team have all they need for sell in
  • Guided by ongoing seasonal sales analysis and feedback from reps in the field, strategize on which titles and products need marketing vs. publicity pushes
  • Responsibility for our attendance at relevant US consumer and trade fairs (notably NY Now)
Sales:
  • Liaise with sales teams (at Hachette UK, HBG and Chronicle) to determine sales budgets and goals, print runs, work across divisions to ensure sales goals are being met
Marketing:
  • Develop, manage and track marketing budgets for the 3 lists ensuring appropriate allocation of resources, and suggest spend for campaigns
  • With your team, create impactful and measurable on and offline marketing campaigns (paid and organic) which directly drive sales
  • Work alongside publishing teams in both the US and UK to ensure all key stakeholders stay informed and involved in campaign strategy across list
Publicity:
  • With your team, create, present and implement integrated publicity campaigns for designated lists and titles/products and to grow sales, raise author/book/product profile and brand awareness
  • Deliver high quality author/contributor care at all times
  • Liaise closely with editorial, sales and marketing team to ensure fully integrated campaigns

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED:
The ideal candidate will have:
  • Proven experience in sales, preferably in the publishing industry
  • Proven experience of forecasting, managing budgets and delivering sales
  • Proven experience of managing a team
  • Experience in marketing and publicity - managing, developing and measuring campaigns
  • Ability to work across time zones (PST and EST) and with stakeholders across the US and UK
  • Strong initiative and judgment. Results-oriented and able to work well independently as well as collaboratively or with a team
  • Strong communication skills with the aptitude to communicate effectively in both individual and group settings

The compensation range for this position is $100,000-$115,000. Salary can vary based on a number of factors including skills, experience, and location — talk with your recruiter to learn more. There may be times that you will be required (or requested) to work overtime due to the nature of your role or exceptional workload issues or special projects.
