The Safety Specialist is responsible for the overall safety and security of staff in the
workplace. The Safety Specialist enforces all safety- and security-related policies,
procedures, and training and maintains facility security by monitoring security
controls and responding to calls, complaints, and emergencies involving staff,
facilities, and grounds. The Safety Specialist provides first aid, takes precautions to
minimize disruptions, prepares written incident reports, and conducts safety and
security training.
Duties and Responsibilities
1. Manage facility safety and security protocol and compliance; prevent and
identify safety and security threats; participate in emergency preparedness
planning
2. Monitor requirements and compliance with preventative maintenance regimes
required by OSHA, IGF internal policies and procedures, and other regulator
codes and regulations
3. Oversee, locate, inspect, troubleshoot, and initiate necessary safety and
security maintenance; alert the leadership team to safety hazards and
property damage
4. Coordinate and oversee employee training on safety and security regulations,
requirements, policies, procedures, and best practices
5. Coordinate and oversee employee training on equipment use and care
6. Coordinate with the Facilities Coordinator to ensure IGF staff follow and
enforce all building- and equipment-related safety standards
7. Oversee use and maintenance of security equipment and systems
8. Help develop and implement security policies and procedures; spearhead
training, monitoring, and enforcement
9. Handle calls, complaints, and emergencies involving IGF personnel and visitors
- Render emergency first aid
- Minimize disruption
- Document and report incidents
- Provide escort services to IGF staff and visitors upon request
- Provide after-hours security checks when necessary
11. Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications (Required)
- Facility Security Officer experience (3 years minimum)
- Knowledge of best practices in fire safety, facility and perimeter security, applicable laws, ordinances, rules, policies, and procedures
- OSHA compliance knowledge for warehouse safety
- Project management experience or skills
- Flexible to accommodate other perspectives
- Proactive, quick-thinking, problem-solving approach to work
- Ability to work independently or as part of a diverse team diverse team, especially building cross-departmental collaboration in a fast paced environment—changing gears when required, whether multitasking or adapting working hours
- Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines; ability to prioritize tasks; build and maintain relationships with customers, staff, and vendors
- Creative; open to new ideas and concepts
- Strong attention to detail and solid written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
- Proficiency in M365, especially Outlook, SharePoint, Teams, and Word
- Ability to travel between IGF locations
Qualifications (Preferred)
- Security Guard License
- Experience in community relations, customer service, food distribution,
- hospitality, and/or public contact
- Bilingual communication skills (English and Spanish)
Physical Requirements
- Must be able to access and navigate every department within the organization
- Must be able to bend, lift (at least 55 lb.), stretch, and climb (including
- ladders)
- Must be able to sustain prolonged periods of standing and walking
- Must be able to work across temperature zones (dry/refrigerated/frozen)
- Requires bending, sitting, standing, walking, use of hands, arms, legs, eyes, and voice
