About the Department:University Inspection Team (UNIT):
The purpose of the Laboratory Inspection Program is to prevent accidents and injuries by identifying, eliminating, and minimizing actual or potential hazards in labs and to ensure compliance with regulations and University standards. UNIT conducts inspections to ensure lab personnel are remaining compliant with applicable training requirements, implementing appropriate engineering controls, administrative controls, and work practices, wearing proper personal protective equipment (PPE), using and maintaining laboratory equipment in a safe operating condition, effectively managing hazardous chemicals and regulated unwanted materials; and understanding the appropriate procedures to follow during emergencies. UNIT also performs inspections to collaborate with lab personnel to address lab-specific hazards and help provide a work environment that is free of recognizable hazards.
Radiation Safety Program:Maintains compliance with regulations and conditions of licenses and device registrations for use of radioactive materials and radiation generating devices. Radiation Safety support extends to programming on campus proper, satellite locations and the PULSTAR Reactor. Radiation safety program activities include performing radioactive materials laboratory inspections, issuing and processing dosimetry, tracking radioactive material inventory, processing shipments and receipt of hazardous materials, developing campus outreach and educational materials and delivering training classes, and providing consultative services and other program activities associated with radiation safety.
Primary responsibilities include:Conduct and document complex lab safety inspections for University Inspection Team (UNIT) and Radiation Safety Program, applying considerable knowledge and understanding of EHS principles, practices, and equipment to determine if proper methods and procedures are utilized and to assure compliance with Federal, State, local, and Industrial regulations.
- Provides technical support, analysis, and consultative services to PI’s, lab personnel and students to identify and/or rectify deficiencies under EHS programmatic areas, including training to perform self audits
- Administer University, local, State, and Federal guidelines; stay current on emerging industry trends and incorporate changes/updates to campus programs
- Identify, post, mark, monitor, startup and shut down laboratories and use/storage/waste areas
- Review laboratory processes, material inventories, and user training for compliance with requirements of safety plans and associated use permits
- Interpret and communicate inspection findings to EHS program managers and assess, determine, plan, recommend and implement corrective actions and strategies
- Maintain and further develop EHSA database for tracking of EHS data; monitor trends and evaluate existing data
- Provide content for annual reports to regulatory agencies and conduct EHS assessments to determine impact and program effectiveness
- Manage Radiation Dosimetry Programs, in conjunction with Radiation Safety Staff, to support licenses and registrations, to include:
- Dosimetry Assignments
- ALARA reports and recordkeeping
- Record Review and correspondence
- Receive, monitor and deliver shipments of radioactive material to end users
- Radioactive material inventory management
Other Duties:
- Act in an emergency responder role during incident investigations; support of training classes and outreach activities
- Continuous development of the Lab Safety Assessment documents, including questions, outreach and compliance documentation, permit status updates
- Develop educational materials for training for PI and staff on different functions of EHS and our websites and functions
- Create and curate tracking metrics for all UNIT inspections and any programmatic need
- Special projects (water testing, fume hood testing, spill response, hazard assessments/awareness)
- Other duties as assigned
- Bachelor’s degree in a Physical Science, Biological Science, Environmental Science/Engineering, Occupational Safety, Industrial Technology or related discipline; or an equivalent combination of training and experience
- Considerable knowledge of regulations associated with hazardous material management, radiation safety practices, and emergency planning, preparedness and response
- Considerable knowledge of database use and management to track performance outcomes
- Experience with regulations and program management
- Demonstrates understanding and application of regulatory codes/directives to implement institutional practices and develop corrective actions
- Knowledge of a broad array of hazardous materials to perform program functions
- Strong interpersonal communication skills
- Articulate and succinct written and oral communication abilities
- Keen sense of organizational direction and awareness, to predict needs and make sound recommendations for solutions
- Bachelor’s degree in in a Physical Science, Biological Science, Environmental Science/Engineering, Occupational Safety, Industrial Technology or related discipline with experience in an academic setting
- Considerable knowledge of database use and management to track performance outcomes
- Experience with emergency planning, preparedness and response
- Maintain DOT/IATA certifications for hazardous material shipping and security (Radiation specific)
