Jacobs Technology is the advanced technology arm of Jacobs Engineering (NYSE:JEC), one of the largest engineering and technical service companies in the United States. Jacobs has partnered with NASA to support space flight programs for more than 40 years and held the predecessor Engineering and Science Contract (ESC) since 2005. We look forward to continuing that work as the prime contractor for the JSC Engineering, Technology, and Science (JETS) contract along with our eleven teammate companies to provide engineering, scientific and technical contract services at NASA's Johnson Space Center (Houston, TX). JETS provides products and technical services related to human operations in space through development and integration of a broad spectrum of engineering requirements. This includes human spacecraft flight and flight development products, human exploration mission planning for NASA, institution support services, and new technology development. Our long-term client relationship with NASA has led to a need for a Safety Engineerto join our team with JETS II Teammate company, Nexus Solutions.
**This is a temporary role not to exceed 4 months**
The Safety Engineer will:

  • Ensure compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Association (OSHA), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA), Johnson Space Center (JSC), and State and local requirements.
  • Act as a mentor to management and employees for the implementation of the JETS Safety Program.
  • Assist in procedure development and review technical documents to ensure compliance with safety requirements.
  • Conduct audits and walk-throughs to ensure organizational compliance with the safety program.
  • Provide guidance to operations to ensure safe and environmentally responsible work practices are implemented.
  • Identify and communicate hazards, causes, and effects as they apply to fabrication/machining areas and research laboratories.
  • Develop hazard controls and verifications to mitigate identified hazards.
  • Independently analyze and make recommendations for system design, equipment, and procedures to control or eliminate hazards.
  • Create hazard analysis products for facility systems used in support of fabrication/machining areas and research laboratories using safety analysis techniques to include System Hazard Analysis and Failure Modes and Effects Analysis.
  • Assistance in the creation Job Hazard Analysis for tasks performed in fabrication/machining areas and research laboratories.
  • Conduct safety and environmental health related training and design new training classes as needed.
  • Participate in User Readiness Reviews as a subject matter expert.
  • Research, recommend procurement and train employees in the use of personal protective equipment required to mitigate identified workplace hazards.
  • Perform incident investigations to identify root cause and corrective actions.
  • Provide periodic safety reports and briefings to management.
  • Provide program management responsibilities for all safety related programs and initiatives.
  • Perform ergonomic assessments for field and office work environments.
  • Coordinate requirements for compliance with hazardous materials management requirements.
  • Coordinate requests for sampling of workplace exposures for physical and chemical hazards.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Requisition Qualifications:
This position has been posted at multiple levels. Depending on the candidate's experience, requirements, and business needs, we reserve the right to consider candidates at any level for which this position has been advertised.
  • Typically requires a bachelor's degree, and 5+ years of safety experience.
  • Must have excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • Working knowledge of OSHA regulations.
  • Proficiency with MS Office required.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen and successfully complete a U.S. government background investigation.

Requisition Preferences:
  • Prefer ABET accredited bachelor's degree in occupational safety and health, Industrial Hygiene, Safety Engineering, Science, Industrial Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering and at least five (5) years of direct safety experience.
  • Direct experience with Incident & Injury Free and Behavior-Based Safety techniques desired.
  • Experience in medical/scientific locations is preferred
  • MS degree in specialty is preferred.
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) certification is preferred.

Essential Functions
Work Environment
Generally an office and scientific laboratory environment can involve inside or outside work depending on task.
Physical Requirements
Work may involve sitting or standing for extended periods (90% of the time). May require lifting and carrying up to 10 lbs. (5% of time). Must have sufficient mobility to enter laboratory facilities or enter confined spaces as necessary (5% of time).
Equipment and Machines
Standard office equipment (PC, telephone, printer, etc.).
Attendance
Regular attendance in accordance with an established work schedule is critical. Ability to work outside normal schedule and adjust schedule to meet peak periods and surge requirements when required.
Other Essential Functions
Must be able to work in a team atmosphere. Must put forward professional behavior that enhances productivity and promotes teamwork and cooperation. Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.
