Reporting to the Vice President of Automation and Digital Strategy, the Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) Consulting Engineer is primarily responsible for development of enterprise SIS practices and procedures, and for directing the development, design, procurement, installation, and ongoing administration of Our client Safety Instrumented Systems.

Management Requirements:

  • Directs, plans, and schedules the development, design, and administration of Our client (OUR CLIENT) Safety Instrumented Systems.
  • Collaborates with leadership to develop and meet tactical goals and objectives while supplying expertise and guidance to projects and sites.
  • Recruits, interviews, hires, and trains a professional, technical, and clerical staff capable of meeting current and future needs, including direct-hires and contract support.
  • Builds systems capability that reflects the highest state of technical sophistication consistent with the OUR CLIENT’s needs and budget, while ensuring the relevant process safety standards are followed.
  • Serve initially as an individual contributor, but eventually grow the department to include additional personnel as plants are brought online as resources are needed to support the design of new plants and the running/maintenance/modification of existing plants.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Serves as the corporate subject matter expert (SME) for Safety Instrumented Systems
  • Directly participates in all HAZOP and LOPA studies
  • Provides technical guidance in the generation of enterprise specifications, standards, and procedures concerning SIS systems.
  • Approves deviations to enterprise specifications, standards, and procedures
  • Development of SIS maintenance and modification practices
  • Development of bypass management procedures
  • Provides input on SIS programming standards
  • Provides input on HMI graphics templates
  • Coordination with multiple groups (Operations, Maintenance, Reliability, Engineering)
  • Provides subject matter expertise on multiple, concurrent projects.
  • Provides technical guidance to engineering contractors and vendors in support of the design of SIS
  • Reviews and provides technical approval of SIS design documents
  • Attends and provides technical acceptance of safety system configuration
  • Responsible for the development of testing protocols and associated maintenance routines

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Possesses a mastery of IEC-61511, with knowledge and experience of each step of the safety lifecycle
  • Experience performing SIL verification calculations
  • Ideal candidate has knowledge of process instrumentation, motor controls, and final elements
  • Experience specifying instrumentation, control, and safety systems
  • Ideal candidate should have a strong working knowledge of industrial control systems, including PLCs and DCSs. Experience with DeltaV DCS and SIS a strong plus.
  • Extensive knowledge of the principles, procedures, and best practices in the industry.
  • Strong work ethic and hands-on approach, self-starter and self-motivated.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a cross-functional team. Must work effectively with others outside the line of formal authority to accomplish organizational goals and to identify and resolve problems
  • Willingness to travel both domestically and internationally (up to 25%)
  • Strong oral and written communications skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience working on Safety Instrumented Systems is required. Experience in both the design and maintenance of SIS is preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, P.E. license a plus
  • Must hold an active Functional Safety Certification, ideally Exida or TUV
  • Experience with conducting FSAs
  • Experience in developing SRS
  • Experience writing test procedures
  • Experience with HIPS, boilers, and fired equipment SIS is a plus
  • Experience with SIS inside of polymers/plastics plants a plus. Is there a better description of what we’re doing here?
