The Safety Coordinator is responsible for planning, implementing, and overseeing the company's employee safety at work as well as monitoring and guiding the administration of worker's compensation claims. Their primary duty is to ensure that the company complies and adheres to Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) guidelines to reduce work-related injuries. To be successful, you will be comfortable engaging and influencing site leaders, demonstrating leadership in all areas of occupational safety, and holding yourself and others accountable for results. This position requires an individual who can provide generalized technical guidance on health and safety compliance issues.
The Safety Coordinator, along with the Site Supervisor, is required to conduct regular safety meetings with employees. The incumbent is responsible for providing all new employees with safety training to ensure proper education in UTC's safety policies and procedures, as well as any safety requirements of the host facility. He/she is responsible for maintaining ongoing training on new procedures, as well as ensuring refresher courses are conducted with existing employees when warranted. The incumbent may be required to provide training related to AAR, BOE, and FRA regulatory requirements when requested by the location supervisor. He/she keeps all safety records on all employees on-site to maintain compliance with OSHA standards, ensures proper safety equipment is available for all employees, and monitors daily work activities for unsafe working conditions. Safety Coordinator is also responsible for following up on all accident investigations, as well as near-miss reports from the Supervisors to ensure the facts are reported accurately, and adequate corrective actions are taken to prevent a recurrence.
Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Develop, implement, train, enforce, review, audit and update H&S programs, policies, and procedures to ensure compliance with all regulations set by the company and regulatory agencies are met
- Monitor local workers' compensation program
- Coordinate and support departmental managers and supervisors in the accident investigation and reporting of incidents; take the lead when assigned and manage emergency situations as needed
- Schedule and assist with Industrial Hygiene program to include preparation and explanation of reports
- Oversee safety audits
- Lead by example and support company initiatives and goals
The incumbent must lead by example and ensure that safety comes before all else. The incumbent works to epitomize Union Tank Car's Quality Policy and to meet internal and external customer expectations at all times by fully applying oneself to the task involved, preventing errors, and developing and implementing personal quality improvement projects. In addition, the incumbent is required to understand the Responsible Care Management System and actively participate in activities outlined therein. The incumbent will support the company and employee values as well as support company's initiatives.
SKILLS/SPECIFICATIONS:
- Excellent writing, presentation, and communication skills required to interact effectively with company employees/managers and host site employees
- Ability to work in a fast-paced and changing environment with a variety of personalities in a professional manner
- Familiarity with reporting, developing policies and implementing OSH training programs
- Ability to promote a "safe culture"
- Knowledge of potentially hazardous materials is preferred
- Ability to wear safety equipment, such as safety shoes, safety glasses, hard hats, earplugs, and respirators
- Ability to climb ladders to heights of approximately 14 feet high, bend, stoop, stretch, lift, and carry objects
- Ability to enter tanks cars via a manway opening from 18" to 20" in diameter Have keen visual and audio acuity to recognize various shop danger-warning signals to avoid injuries and promote a safe work environment
- Ability to read and interpret gauges and use test equipment associated with Quality Assurance inspections
- Some locations may require completing a CSST training (Construction Site Safety Technician)
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS:
- Minimum High School diploma and three (3) years of related safety experience are required. College Degree in a related field is preferred
- Working knowledge of MS Office is required
- Experience and working knowledge of OSHA 29 CFR 1910 and NFPA regulations are preferred
- Industrial hygiene experience or certification is preferred
- First aid and CPR certifications are preferred
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Assists, plans and implements safety policies and procedures in compliance with local, state, and federal rules and regulations including OSHA and NFPA Plans and implements health and safety training for employees, and maintains all employee's safety records in compliance with OSHA standards
- Identifies and develops safety material for supervisory personnel that will enable them to conduct meaningful safety meetings with employees
- Conducts safety audits and inspections, prepares applicable written reports of findings and recommendations for corrective and preventative measures Follows up on each accident investigation and near-miss report submitted by supervisors to ensure the root cause investigation reported accurately and adequate corrective action is taken to prevent a recurrence.
- Establishes and maintains good customer relationships by actively participating in all local contractor safety associations and councils
- Monitors and guides the administration of worker's compensation claims
