The Department of Revenue established this position as hybrid remote.

The North Carolina Department of Revenue continuously recruits for Revenue Field Auditor I positions to work out of the Elizabeth City Service Center. The primary purpose of these positions is to conduct independent examinations of financial records of taxpayers that have unique or special audit features or anticipated accounting, tax law, or investigative problems. It is the responsibility of this position to review and audit, in an accurate and thorough manner, all tax schedules administered by the Department to ensure they are in compliance with the statues and to make appropriate adjustments based on the accounting records available.

This is a great opportunity for someone with excellent time management skills who enjoys working independently with minimum oversight from management. This position maintains audit plans, which include simultaneously selecting audit candidates, scheduling taxpayer interviews, reviewing provided records, and preparing and submitting audit reports for timely review. The Revenue Field Auditor I uses resourcefulness to select taxpayers that appear not to be in compliance with state tax laws and select taxpayers for audit where adjustments generate additional tax revenues. This position involves regular travel to taxpayer locations within an assigned territory and limited overnight travel. Access to reliable transportation and a valid driver's license is required.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Effectively and efficiently research, identify, and select quality and diverse audit candidates, in a variety of industries, business types, organizational structures, and tax schedules
  • Document and maintain audit status and communications within agency databases and systems, documentation logs, and audit templates
  • Obtain all necessary factual documentation to support audit findings
  • Plan work in an efficient manner ensuring deadlines are met
  • Prepare concise work papers and reports that clearly explain the findings resulting from completed examinations
  • Reconstruct and develop accounting methods that properly reflect income/sales and expenses in cases where either no records or inadequate records or accounting data is available
  • Develop MS Excel spreadsheets, MS Word documents, and maintain MS Access documents.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

  • Basic knowledge of the Internal Revenue Code and State Tax Laws across multiple schedules
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Word
  • Ability to work efficiently with Microsoft Access Databases
  • Basic knowledge of auditing and accounting principles and practices
  • Ability to communicate comprehensive information on matters of a complex nature in a concise manner
  • Effective analytical skills that would be helpful with investigation of complex tax compliance issues
  • Ability to discuss and resolve technical and controversial tax matters
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with taxpayers and employees

MANAGEMENT PREFERENCE:

  • Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Word

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Some state job postings say you can qualify by an “equivalent combination of education and experience.” If that language appears below, then you may qualify through EITHER years of education OR years of directly related experience, OR a combination of both. Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Economics, Accounting or related field with at least eighteen semester hours of accounting from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
