The Erie Regional Office of the Bureau of Audits is seeking an individual with strong attention to detail who would enjoy learning the process of conducting audits that will be used to determine compliance of applicable tax laws and regulations. This position contributes to the organization's objective by helping to ensure that the employee is properly trained to conduct audits in accordance with established policies and procedures.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

As a Revenue Tax Auditor Trainee, you will participate in the conduct of selected audits for the purpose of receiving on the job training in sales and use tax, liquid fuels tax, and corporate tax audit programs. You will learn to prepare for on-site examinations by performing preliminary planning and reviewing and researching departmental records for tax reporting and audit history, as well as potential collateral assignments.

Gain the skills needed to learn to visually inspect taxpayer facilities to ascertain business activities and limit of operations. You will assist in the performance of system surveys of accounting functions by analyzing financial records and learning to design appropriate audit procedures in accordance with applicable tax manuals, so as to effectively and efficiently perform examinations. You will also assist in the conduct of audits at the taxpayer location by examining and analyzing pertinent books and financial records to determine correct tax liabilities or verify the accurate remittance of tax, in accordance with applicable tax law(s), regulations, policies, procedures and/or precedent cases.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:
  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 60-minute lunch.
  • Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Erie.
  • Salary:In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:
  • A bachelor’s degree that includes 15 college credits in accounting, tax, or auditing; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training that includes 15 college credits in accounting, tax, or auditing.
  • Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements once they are within 6 months of graduating with a qualifying degree/credits.
