Description:
The Biology Department is seeking a full-time Research Technologist who will investigate the structure and function of microbes. The primary duties and responsibilities of the employee will include using bacteria and parasites as model organisms, lab management, and conducting scientific research in Dr. Gira Bhabha’s and Damian Ekiert’s laboratories. The individual will work with the Principal Investigator (PI) to manage and organize the laboratory and conduct experiments.
SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
- Knowledge of related technology, instruments, and equipment in biochemistry and structural biology.
- Ability to exercise professional judgment, excellent written and oral communication skills are desired.
- Mastery with molecular biology techniques (recombinant DNA cloning) is desired.
- Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills are required.
- Able to work in an active, high performing, multi-tasking environment.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Some related post-undergraduate work experience preferred.

Responsibilities:
Lab Management Responsibilities include, but is not limited to,
- Ensuring that standard operating procedures (SOPs) to ensure the efficiency and effectiveness of the lab functions is used by all lab members.
- Ordering supplies and materials for a very active research group, includes negotiating with vendors, placing orders and following up on orders.
- Organizing and stocking adequate lab reagents.
- Receiving and unpacking packages to ensure accuracy and efficiency for experiments.
- Maintaining lab plasmid inventory.
- Proper disposal of chemical and biological waste, ensuring that all processes are followed.
- Making common lab reagents, solutions/buffers and media for multiple experiments and projects.
- Organizing and maintaining lab inventory to ensure the effectiveness of the lab processes.
- Ensuring that all safety protocols are followed and updating safety procedures as needed; scheduling safety training for the team; point of contact for safety inspections.
- Assisting in the high standard of organization in the lab to ensure the success of projects and experiments, this includes maintaining equipment service calls, contracts, and required forms.
Scientific Researcher Responsibilities may include, but is not limited to,
- Conduct research, using structural biology techniques such as Cryo EM and X-ray crystallography, in combination with biochemical and functional assays to study complex biological mechanisms.
- Cloning and generation of plasmids.
- Protein expression, purification and biochemistry.
- Cell culture.
- Attending and presenting data in lab meetings.
- Tracking laboratory-derived data and results; responsible for keeping accurate lab record keeping.
