About the Department
Mountain Horticultural Crops Research and Extension Center supports agricultural research on horticultural and other crops relevant to western NC and the state of North Carolina. The Center provides resources such as land, equipment, facilities, expertise, and personnel to research scientists conducting field research on agricultural commodities. The 397-acre Center houses twelve administrative and operational staff, as well as research faculty from six academic departments and Administrative offices for two Cooperative Extension district offices. The Center is also a hub in western NC for Extension education programs.
Essential Job Duties
The Research Technician position will provide crucial operational support for agricultural research projects focused on a variety of primary crops including apples, tomatoes, ornamentals, corn, and soybeans. This role is pivotal in ensuring the success of existing research programs by actively engaging in field work, operating tractors and other farm equipment, applying pesticides, and providing cultural care for crops. The position demands a task-oriented approach with a significant emphasis on equipment operation and fieldwork. Additionally, the incumbent may be required to oversee and direct the work of temporary employees.

- Conduct field work activities in support of ongoing agricultural research projects.
- Operate tractors and other farm equipment safely and efficiently.
- Apply pesticides according to established protocols and safety guidelines.
- Provide cultural care for various crops including apples, tomatoes, ornamentals, corn, and soybeans.
- Assist in the coordination and execution of research experiments and trials.
- Maintain accurate records of field activities, observations, and data collection.
- Collaborate with research scientists and other team members to achieve project objectives.
- May be responsible for directing the work of temporary employees, providing guidance and support as needed.

Qualifications
Minimum Experience/Education
Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.
Other Required Qualifications
- Agricultural crop production experience.
- Agricultural machinery operation experience.
- Demonstrated attention to detail and safe work habits.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in agricultural work and/or applied research.
Required License or Certification
- A valid driver’s license is required for travel. NC driver’s license is required within 60 days of hire and must be maintained.
- NC Pesticide Applicator’s License or ability to obtain one within 6 months of start.
