Job description

This position is part of the Department of Pharmacology at Vanderbilt University where traditional academic pursuits in basic science are extended to advance our understanding of human disease and drug targets to directly impact patient care.

The Nguyen lab in the Department of Pharmacology and Vanderbilt Brain Institute studies mechanisms of hyperexcitability in the brain. Our lab utilizes approaches such as ex vivo and in vivo electrophysiology, 2-photon calcium imaging, closed-loop optogenetics, and EEG recording in mice to understand neuronal function and how it goes awry in disorders such as epilepsy.

The position calls for a motivated biological scientist to join the team. The Research Specialist will be a key contributor to support the lab’s goals and will be directly involved in the planning, execution, and analysis of experiments in the lab working alongside the principal investigator of the lab as well as fellow students and researchers. Ability to work both independently and as part of a larger team is expected. Successful candidates will have the opportunity to interface with members of the greater neuroscience community at Vanderbilt and beyond at collaborating institutions and research entities.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Maintain and genotype mouse colonies
  • Prepare buffers and reagents
  • Perform experiments in live mice including stereotaxic surgery, imaging, and mouse behavior assays and maintain detailed records of experiments and outcomes
  • Analyze experimental results using computer-aided data analysis software
  • Perform tissue extraction and sectioning
  • Design, perform, and optimize immunostaining experiments and analyze results.
  • Assist with general laboratory maintenance including maintenance of equipment, chemical inventory, biosafety records and protocols, and inventory and ordering of supplies
  • Assist with training new lab members on performing experiments and equipment maintenance
  • Contribute to the publication of results as needed. Participate in the preparation of written documents, including procedures, presentations, and proposals

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, neuroscience, chemistry, bioengineering, or related field of study is necessary.
  • 2-3 years’ experience necessary with at least 1 year of rodent handling experience preferred.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Good documentation practices with excellent organization and attention to detail
  • Self-motivated team player with the ability to thrive in a fast paced, dynamic, multi-disciplinary environment.
