Posting Context Statement
This position will assist with activities related to Cropping Systems Agronomy and plant pathology in dryland, cereal-based Cropping Systems in northern Idaho. Primary research activities include basic agronomic studies on fall seeded crops, exploring solutions to soil acidification, and studying the epidemiology and disease management of canola diseases. Extension activities involve variety testing trials for small grains in northern Idaho as well as cool season pulse trials across northern Idaho and eastern Washington. The program is substantially involved in field testing at numerous locations including UI research farms and in grower cooperator fields.
Position Overview
Performs research activities and analysis, recording observations and measurements, and reports results. Participates in analyzing and preparing results for publication. Works under general supervision.
Duties may include:
  • Preparing standard solutions for calibration and analyses
  • Interpreting test results and comparing with determined standards and limits
  • Collecting laboratory or field data
  • Conducting research and analysis of scientific data
  • Participating in research design discussions
  • Performing literature reviews
  • Preparing reports
  • Comparing data and historical records for trend verification
  • Developing reference files, comparison charts, and graphs on research data
  • Assisting with site inspections and field oversight
  • Having little or no supervisory responsibilities
  • Other duties as assigned

Position Qualifications
Required Experience
  • Following pre-established procedures or protocols
  • Collecting and reviewing scientific data
  • Keeping complete and accurate records
  • Working in a team environment

Required Education
  • Bachelor's degree in Plant Science, Ag Systems Management, Crop Science, Soil Science, or Environmental Science.

Required Other
  • Must have an Idaho pesticide applicators license, or able to obtain within six months of hire
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and be able to meet policy requirements for driving university-owned vehicles
  • Ability to travel with occasional overnight trips during the field season
  • Ability to work irregular hours during critical field activities (planting and harvest)

Additional Preferred
  • One year of agricultural research experience.
  • Experience operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting basic problems with research equipment and field machinery.
  • Experience operating vehicles towing loaded trailers.
  • Experience using Word, Excel and other basic computer programs.
  • Possess good interpersonal and communication skills (oral and written).

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
  • Work in adverse environmental conditions (i.e. hot, dusty, windy, cold conditions).
  • May be required to occasionally work with toxic, volatile, corrosive, or carcinogenic chemicals.
  • Must be able to lift, carry or otherwise move up to 50 lbs
