Specifically, they will oversee the research team and the design, collection, processing, and dissemination of data from a nationwide randomized clinical trial of service dogs for military veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder (NIH R01).

Duties & Responsibilities

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Participate as a senior collaborator to design and conduct cutting-edge and societally important research initiatives, including a nationwide randomized clinical trial (NIH R01) of service dogs for military veterans with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), leading substantive aspects of the overall project. Responsible for day-to-day operation of the OHAIRE research group with support for innovation and independent decision making in the development, planning, design, and conduct of the research methods.
  • Oversee day-to-day operations of the research group and supervise other research and support personnel.
  • Foster and maintain an inclusive, productive working environment.
  • Maintain systems to oversee and coordinate day-to-day research tasks, providing guidance and troubleshooting.
  • Design, organize, manage, and carry out innovative new research project.
  • Collaborate in the development of novel research methods and measures.
  • Lead publication and dissemination efforts of study findings.
  • Actively participate in acquiring research funding, including initiating and writing grant proposals.
  • Contribute to ensuring regulatory compliance of the research program by coordinating with granting agencies and regulators including the Institutional Review Board (IRB), Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), and Data Safety and Monitoring Board (DSMB).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • The ideal candidate should exhibit excellent leadership and research skills. They should also have a high level of organization, professionalism, reliability, interpersonal communication skills, and the ability to work both independently and in a team environment. They should be interested in and motivated to lead a productive research group in the field of human-animal interaction.

    • Professional research skills
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
    • Ability to guide, supervise, and support students and staff
    • Ability to work independently on complex projects requiring problem solving
    • Knowledge of research project management
    • Ability to develop and carry out experimental protocols (e.g., clinical trials)
    • Ability to manage IRB and IACUC protocols
    • Skill in research writing
    • Knowledge of peer-reviewed publications
    • Knowledge of conference abstracts, poster presentations, & oral presentations
    • Skill in grant writing
Minimum Qualifications
  • PhD or equivalent terminal degree in a related discipline required.
  • Minimum of 8 years of relevant work experience is required.
