About the IEN/IMat Materials Characterization Facility (MCF) at the Georgia Institute of Technology

Materials discovery is the foundation of many new technologies and is vital to economic growth as well as to the development of solutions to 21st century challenges in energy, mobility, infrastructure, computing, communications, security, and health. Founded in 2012 as one of Georgia Techs 10 interdisciplinary research institutes, the Institute for Materials at Georgia Tech seeks to enable and support Georgia Techs internationally recognized materials research and innovation ecosystem; establishing and supporting large-scale industry and government partnerships, developing opportunities for Georgia Tech researchers to catalyze new ideas, and establishing Georgia Tech as an internationally recognized hub for core materials research facilities, infrastructure and knowledge.

The IEN/IMat Materials Characterization Facility (MCF) is the main facility for materials analysis at Georgia Tech. The facility leadership and main core lab are located in the state-of-the-art Marcus Nanotechnology Building.

Available to academic, industry, and government users, The Materials Characterization Facility (MCF) is a coordinated set of complementary labs that enable internal GT and external researchers to analyze material properties at all scales from atomic-level ordering to collective behavior of molecules, compounds, & crystals to the macroscopic behavior of bulk solids and structures. The MCF is composed of several core labs - each specializing in one aspect of materials analysis that are distributed across multiple buildings on campus. Areas of emphasis include:

    Electron Microscopy

    Scanning Probe Microscopy

    Optical Microscopy and Spectroscopy

    X-Ray Diffraction & Spectroscopy

    Surface Science

    Mechanical Testing

    Molecular Property Measurement

The MCF offers shared-user access to the latest in imaging and analysis technology, which can be accessed by users 24 hours a day. It also provides a full complement of services for researchers including:

    Basic and advanced instrument training

    Imaging and analysis consultations

    Remote sample prep, measurement, and data analysis

    Paper and proposal collaboration

Job Summary

The Institute for Materials (IMat) is seeking a Research Scientist to support Its Materials Characterization Facility ("MCF").

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Training users on multiple analysis instruments in the Materials Characterization Facility ("MCF")

  • Helping with data analysis and provide guidance with advanced measurement modes

  • Guiding characterization work for internal/ external users from academia, industry, and the government

  • Supporting the Education and Outreach Efforts of the MCF and the National Nanotechnology Coordinated Infrastructure ("NNCI")

Required Qualifications

This position vacancy is an Open Rank announcement. Final job offer will be dependent on candidate qualifications in alignment with Research Faculty ranks as outlined in section 3.2.1 of the Georgia Tech Faculty Handbook (https://www.policylibrary.gatech.edu/faculty-handbook/3.2.1-research-faculty-hiring-and-promotion=-guidelines)

Research Scientist II

    A master's degree in science, engineering or related area, and three (3) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree, or

    A master's degree in science, engineering or related area, and five (5) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a bachelor's degree, or

    A doctoral degree

Senior Research Scientist

    A master's degree and seven (7) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree, or

    A master's degree and nine (9) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a bachelor's degree, or

    A doctoral degree and four (4) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a bachelor's degree
