Summary
The University of Michigan Life Sciences Institute (U-M LSI) is looking for a specialist to support the daily operation of a Cryo-FIB-SEM dual beam system (ThermoFisher Aquilos 2) and a cryo-confocal microscope (Leica Stellaris) for sample preparation pipelines for cryo-electron tomography (cryo-ET). The U-M LSI hosts a well-established, Electron Microscopy Suite (2 Titan Krios, Talos Arctica, and a Glacios, each equipped with direct electron detector). You will join a vibrant, collaborative research community and play a role in equipment maintenance, sample preparation, and training users. You will also work with the cryo-ET group in developing and integrating cryo-ET workflows. You will report to Dr. Ohi and work with Dr. Mosalaganti and other members of the LSI Cryo-EM team.

Responsibilities*
- Establish sample preparation methods and workflows for cryo-focused ion beam (cryo-FIB) milling of cellular specimens and lift out of tissues/organoid samples
- Daily maintenance and operation of the Aquilos2 and cryo-CLEM microscopes
- Coordinate and report equipment problems to the manufacturer and facility users
- Train users in lamella preparation and cryo-confocal microscopy
- Establish and improve equipment operation protocols
- Work with diverse groups of faculty, staff, and trainees
- Work with cryo-EM team of specialists and faculty to ensure EM facility is running efficiently
Required Qualifications*
- Bachelor's degree in Biology, Biochemistry, Biophysics, Material Science, or a related field
- Ability to work in a team environment and work collaboratively
- Knowledge of principles of Focused Ion Beam (FIB) milling, Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and fluorescence/light microscopy
- Experience working with light or electron microscopes
Desired Qualifications*
- Master's or PhD in Biology, Biochemistry, Biophysics or a related field
- Experience in Cryo-EM/ET
- 1 year experience using confocal/light microscopy
- 1 year experience providing instruction/training to others
