Job Summary:
This individual will support processes related to the Research department. The ideal Research Assistant will play an important part in supporting the breeding program. The ideal Research Assistant is highly organized with attention to detail and strong communication skills. This position will be expected to accurately clean, package, and layout seed for nurseries and breeding trials. Keep detailed records of seed sources used for yield trials and seed testing. Must be able to assist in moving increase stock and bulky objects, and work in all weather conditions.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Perform statistical analysis to support the decision-making processes for the breeding program
- Assist with and learn /train on the breeding program processes and activities by collaborating with supervisors to oversee the job duties of hourly associates (this includes traveling offsite to the research fields)
- Support and coordinate segregating population labeling, sampling, harvesting, and threshing responsibilities by overseeing the job duties of hourly associates.
- Collecting flower, pubescence, and pod color data during visits to the research fields
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite to support breeding program needs
- Knowledge of farm machinery operation, which includes tractors, sprayers, and combines
- Teamwork skills
- Independent and proactive
- Ability to assist with and learn / train on all aspects of the breeding program, which includes planting, growing, harvesting, preventative maintenance of vehicles and farm equipment, and warehouse activities
- Ability to work a flexible schedule depending on seasonal needs and prioritize tasks during peak times
- Ability to obtain pesticide applicators' license preferred
Education and Experience:
- Associate's/Bachelor's Degree in Agronomy, Crop & Soil Sciences, or similar fields
- Experience in phenotyping data collection and statistical analysis to ensure the success of the breeding program
- Experience with Agriculture/Research machinery/equipment Experience in a Seed Testing Laboratory or a Plant Breeding program, which includes planting, growing, and harvesting small plot research fields preferable
Physical Requirements:
- Walking fields for prolonged times during peak season
- Ability to lift 50 lbs.
