Description of Job
About the Work Unit
This position is located in CDOT's Region 4 Sterling Engineering Residency. This residency provides project design, construction and materials support to Sterling and the surrounding areas. It ensures that projects which improve and maintain the transportation system within the Region are designed and constructed in a safe and cost effective manner, including materials utilized in the projects.
About the Position
As an Engineering/Physical Sciences Technician II, under the supervision of a licensed Professional Engineer, you will apply and implement engineering theories, principles, and standards and will review the work and documentation done by consultants on projects. This role assists in both design and construction elements of projects, inspecting project work, documenting pay quantities and ensuring compliance through material testing and documentation.
Your duties and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Applies plans, specifications, M & S Standards, and project notes in the inspection of the work progress by contractors to assure conformance to specifications.
  
• During inspections, identifies issues for correction and helps define and implement solutions.
  
• Prepares a complete and accurate account of pay quantities, project activities, correspondence, conditions, and problem resolutions by completing various written and computer-generated reports.
  
• Obtains dimensions of placed, constructed, and/or installed items and calculates required areas, volumes, etc.
  
• Evaluates contractor materials to determine the acceptability to be incorporated or used in the constructed project.
  
• Reviews and checks the accuracy of highway construction project plans and specifications during design of a project and advises the designer of project plan discrepancies.
  
• Makes plan recommendations to Project Engineer based on field experience while considering construction phasing and constructability of the project.
  
• Puts together traffic control plans.
  
• Provides drafting services to detail project plans using OpenRoads software.
  
• Assists with preparing project advertisement packages by attending meetings, organizing documentation, producing cost estimates, and preparing construction schedules.
  
• Acts as project tester of materials (soil, hot mix asphalt, concrete, etc) incorporated into active construction projects, assuring that all requirements of CDOT Field Material Manual are met.
  
• Obtains and maintains certifications in CAPA, ACI, WAQTC, Radiological Nuclear Safety, LIMS and SiteManager.
  
• Mentors and oversee project testers, including training inexperienced project personnel on appropriate procedures, documentation, and input into LIMS.
  
• Checks plan sheets, project specifications, project correspondence, and payments, both during design and construction phases of the project., assuring accuracy and compliance with established standards and policies on all plans by consultants and this design unit.
  
• Other job duties as assigned.

Work Environment:

• Your schedule will be primarily Monday - Friday with opportunity for a flexible schedule outside of the primary construction season. The primary construction season typically spans from the beginning of April to the end of October.
• After a training period, you likely have the option to work a hybrid schedule with a combination of in-office and remote work outside of the primary construction season.
• Approximately 70% spent in the field, 30% spent in the office.
• Required to work outside in all weather conditions, in close proximity to moving traffic, and over variable terrain.
• Travel required to project sites and to attend trainings and meetings.
• Required to operate CDOT vehicles

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED) AND 5 years of full-time professional work experience in a field related to the Major Job Duties with 1 of those years where the primary purpose was assisting in the design of construction plans and/or monitoring construction projects by conducting materials testing, project inspection, and documentation.

OR

• High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED) and a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in geology, engineering, civil engineering technology, construction management, chemistry or a closely related field AND 1 year of full-time professional work experience where the primary purpose was assisting in the design of construction plans and/or monitoring construction projects by conducting materials testing, project inspection, and documentation.

OR

• High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED) and a master's degree from an accredited college or university in geology, engineering, civil engineering technology, construction management, chemistry, or a closely related field.

• Ability to provide recommendations for acceptance, corrective work, or rejection of out-of-specification materials;
• Has certifications in CAPA, ACI, WAQTC and Radiological Nuclear Safety;
• Ability to organize, analyze, and interpret numerical and written data;
• A passion for safety;
• Excellent organizational skills and the ability to prioritize tasks in a fast-moving environment, self-direct, and take initiative with minimum supervision;
• Proven ability to manage multiple assignments, priorities, and projects in a demanding environment;
