Research Assistant II - Lymphoma Myeloma Research
The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center is seeking a highly qualified and motivated Research Assistant II in Dr. Michael Wang's lab. This is a full-time, hands-on research position. We are looking for highly motivated colleagues who can perform and coordinate research projects with minimal guidance from faculty.
Dr. Wang's lab is part of the Department of Lymphoma and Myeloma, which is well funded through multiple funding mechanisms, including two NIH R01s and an R21, two CPRIT grants, and two Leukemia and Lymphoma Society grants. The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center is the nation's #1 ranked cancer center, located within the Texas Medical Center (home to 8 academic and research institutes and 21 hospitals). Houston is a large and vibrant city with an affordable cost of living, two major airports, professional sports teams, and cultural activities.
Essential job functions:
  • Assist the Principal Investigator with scientific research projects.

  • Function in a separate and independent manner in the design and initiation of research experiments.

  • Design, develop, or adapt equipment used in experiments or research to obtain desired results.

  • Determine specific goals or objectives to be obtained, evaluate research data, and develop and revise techniques or approaches to work problems.

  • Plan training and research work activity for assigned laboratory and research personnel.

  • Supervise the use of laboratory equipment and implement safety procedures.

  • Compile, write, and submit project results to mentor.

Animal work:
  • Maintain mouse colonies, including breeding and genotyping. Perform minor surgeries and maintain patient-derived xenograft animal models.

  • Lead in vivo experiments through planning and performing the appropriate treatments, health monitoring, and data collection and organization.

  • Process and evaluate samples collected from mice.

In vitro:
  • Maintain human cell line in vitro cultures.

  • Perform in vitro culture work with sterile techniques.

  • Generate cell lines from human and mouse tissues.

  • Analyze cells through the utilization of western blotting and flow cytometry.

EDUCATION:
Required: Bachelor's degree with major course works in one of the basic sciences.
Preferred: Master's degree with major course works in one of the basic sciences.
EXPERIENCE:
Required: One year experience in scientific or experimental research work. No experience required with preferred degree.
