The Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF) isthe state of Florida's social services agency. Within DCF, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health (SAMH) Program office is recognized as the single state authority for substance abuse and mental health services. The Office of SAMH is statutorily responsible for the planning, evaluation, and implementation of a comprehensive statewide system of care for the prevention, treatment, and recovery of children and adults with serious mental illnesses or substance use disorders.
North Florida Evaluation and Treatment Center (NFETC) is a 216 bed, all male, forensic, mental health rehabilitation facility. The Center is in northeast Gainesville, Florida on 639 picturesque acres with regular sightings of deer, turkey, and other wildlife. NFETC employs a variety of entry level to leadership positions including food service, maintenance, direct care, nurses, counselors, rehab therapists, medical doctors, security, psychiatrists, and psychologists.

This is a highly responsible and professional position that will serve as Rehabilitation Therapist F/C Lifeguard OPS. This position will collaborate with each section within the state facilities and be required to use independent judgement, take initiative in carrying out duties and responsibilities and should be extraordinarily detail oriented.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities include:

  • Maintains current and active Lifeguard certification and functions as the lifeguard for the facility swimming pool as scheduled during the pool season.
  • Works with the Rehabilitation Services department in preparing the facility swimming pool for opening each assigned day of the season. Maintains pool equipment and supplies in proper quantities and in functional, safe working order. Instructs residents and staff in proper pool safety practices and techniques.
  • Assist the Rehabilitation Services staff at planning, coordinating, and facilitating center-wide recreational and social activities, groups, and events, designed to identify and reduce discharge barriers, model, and promote appropriate social interaction skills and enhance overall health and wellness for our residents.
  • Complete current training required by the facility within required timeframes.
  • Report observations regarding resident's behaviors and activities, to treatment team and/or direct care staff for appropriate documentation.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required for the position:
  • Ability to assist in carrying out treatment and rehabilitation activities centered around personal and social adjustments.
  • Ability to assist in group therapy sessions.
  • Ability to observe changes in person serve's behavior patterns.
  • Ability to assist persons served with personal care activities.
  • Ability to assimilate data and recommend changes in policies, procedures, and techniques.
  • Ability to document effectively.
  • Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

Physical agility requirements for Direct Care Staff:
  • Must be able to ambulate up and down a stairwell.
  • Must be able to assist with evacuation of persons served during an emergency.
  • Must have normal vision and hearing, including use of corrective devices.
  • Must be able to work with or around cleaning chemicals and supplies.
  • Must be able to do repetitive movements with arms, hands, neck, and head.
  • Must be able to demonstrate competency, as appropriate, in all areas of training, some of which requires physical activity such as CPR and MANDT.
  • Must be able to bend, twist, turn, kneel, stoop, squat, push, pull, lift, and walk extended distances.
  • Must be able to physically operate all equipment necessary to do job tasks.
  • Must be able to lift and carry 20 pounds.
  • Must be able to sit and/or stand for one hour without a break.
  • Must be able to work 16 hour shifts on occasion.
  • Must be able to remain alert while on duty.
  • Must be able to drive an EZ Go or vehicle if job essential.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • An active Certification as a Lifeguard.
  • An active Certification in CPR/AED.
  • At least 1-2 years previous lifeguarding experience.
