The general hourly range for this position is $25.00-$29.00. Salary offers will be commensurate with experience, qualifications, skills, training and education. 
 
The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the nation's most effective animal protection organization, is seeking a Registered Veterinary Technician for the Animal Rescue Team (ART). Under the direction of the Senior Manager, Animal Care and contracted licensed veterinarians, and in coordination with the Senior Specialist, Animal Health, the Registered Veterinary Technician is responsible for performing in-house clinical treatments, diagnostic procedures, administration of topical, oral, and injectable medications, and monitoring the day-to-day wellbeing of animals rescued by Animal Rescue Team.  
You will be responsible for:
Coordinating as directed by contract licensed veterinarians and in close coordination with the Senior Specialist, Animal Health providing palliative and rehabilitative veterinary care for animals housed at the Maryland Care and Rehabilitation Center; includes wound care, sedation, pain management, physical therapy, and administration of oral, topical, inhalant, or injectable medications and coordinating off site care at full-service hospitals as needed;
Assisting contract veterinarians with examination and assessment of animals during intake and rounds, observing animals daily for signs of emerging illness or indications of recovery from illness or injury;
Conducting in house diagnostics including ultrasound, fecal collection and analysis, cytology, urinalysis, and blood collection and analysis or collection of samples and arrangement for external lab analysis;
Creating and maintaining medical records and logs for patient data, intake examinations, diagnostics, treatments, prescriptions, out-of-house medical care, and euthanasia of animals;
Filling, properly labeled, and dispensing prescriptions as directed for animals departing the facility; instructing caregivers or partners in the administration of prescriptions;
Cleaning, organizing, and maintaining medical spaces, mobile unit, supplies, equipment, and devices and assisting the Senior Specialist of Animal Health with the upkeep of inventory;
Assisting with overseeing volunteers serving in Animal Health Support roles, including training, task assignments, and performance evaluations;
Assisting with euthanasia procedures and arranging necropsies and storage or disposal of remains as directed;
Providing daily cleaning, feeding, watering, and other care for animals under medical observation, as needed;
Deploying on occasion as needed to assist with field intake and examination of animals during natural disasters or large-scale seizures carried out with Law Enforcement; 
Ensuring medical aspects of the Care and Rehabilitation Center meet regulatory standards in accordance with the State of Maryland, DEA and OSHA;
Attending and obtaining the necessary continuing education to maintain Veterinary Technician license, presenting on behalf of HSUS at industry conferences;
Performing other duties or responsibilities, as assigned.
 
Qualifications and Requirements:
 
Associate degree in Veterinary Technology or another animal related field, or equivalent work experience sufficient to obtain Maryland licensure required;
A minimum of four (4) years of experience in veterinary technology required;
Must have or be able to obtain a license as a Registered Veterinary Technician in the State of Maryland within 6 months;
Must commit to exemplifying organization and team norms and creating an inclusive and welcoming workplace culture for staff, forum responders, and volunteers; 
Must have or be able to obtain Fear Free Professional certification within 6 months of employment and commit to creating a Fear Free environment/adhere to a humane hierarchy of animal handling;
Skilled at handling animals, particularly those experiencing fear, anxiety and stress;
Proficiency in identifying signs and symptoms of injury or illness in animals, primarily dogs and cats;
Ability to work independently and as part of a team;
Proficiency with use of Microsoft Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook);
Strong written and verbal communication skills;
Attention to detail and commitment to excellence demonstrated by the delivery of quality and timely outcomes;
Strong interpersonal skills are necessary;
Strong interest in animal protection issues preferred.
