Department Description

The Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) provides care to complex critically ill patients and their families. This population includes patients with severe medical conditions such as respiratory failure, sepsis, acute lung injury, liver and renal dysfunction, acute pancreatitis, oncologic diseases, autoimmune disorders, and critically ill obstetric conditions.
This unit is comprised of a community of skilled, innovative, collaborative, and caring critical care clinicians. The nursing staff have opportunities for specialty training and expertise in continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT), manual proning, and end-of-life/palliative care. The critical care team includes nurses, physicians, respiratory care practitioners, social workers, nutritionists, rehab therapists, and pharmacists; all possess expertise in meeting the needs of critically ill patients and their families.
The Medical ICU has received multiple accolades, including local and national honors and awards. In 2022 and 2023, MICU nurses received the esteemed UCSF Distinguished Nurse Award, as well as annual Department of Nursing awards for Critical Care Excellence, Outstanding Preceptor, Community Service, and Patient Support Colleague. Historically, six RN’s received the UCSF Distinguished Nurse Award and AACN's Excellence in Leadership Award. The unit was awarded the UCSF Team PRIDE Award (2021), the American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN) Beacon Award for Critical Care Excellence (2010) and the Society of Critical Care Medicine’s Family-Centered Care Award (2009).
Nurses are active in improving the care of critically ill patients through innovative projects, evidence-based care, performance improvement, and clinical research. Advancement of professional practice and education are priorities for our team.
