What we want.
The Registered Nurse I supports the Diabetes Education Program. Performs initial and re-assessments for program participants (patients) and provides diabetes education and care instructions. Acts in accordance with Professional Nursing Standards.

Ability to work beyond normal office hours and/or on weekends. Ability to travel to various program locations
Required Education and Experience:
- Successful completion of Registered Nurse education program
Required Licenses and Certifications:
- Licensed in the State of Texas as a Registered Nurse. CPR certified
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others
- Ability to work with sensitive information and maintain confidentiality
- Ability to use and manage an electronic medical/health records system
- Knowledge of standard nursing procedures and techniques. Knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet applications
- Knowledge of confidentiality laws and regulations. Strong written and communication skills. Strong interpersonal skills
- Time management and organizational skills

Responsibilities
Diabetes Education/ Care Instructions
- Develops, maintains, and provides individualized diabetes self-education and support/care plans for program participants (patients) and monitors progress on a quarterly basis.
- Collaborates with referring providers and other healthcare professionals who are not part of the Diabetes Self-Management Education and Support (DSMES) service regarding education provided, education plans, and outcomes.
- Provides preventive education to the community and students.
- Documents and maintains class participants' education records and health care needs.
- Maintains State Department of Health records as required.
- Travels to various education locations and assumes responsibility of assigned location(s).
Patient Assessments
- Performs comprehensive initial and quarterly reassessments of participant's education and health care needs, including diabetes self-management knowledge, skills, and readiness for behavioral/lifestyle change.
- Collects biometric data, including blood pressure, heart rate, weight, BMI, body fat percentage, blood glucose, and hemoglobin A1c (HBA1c).
- Maintains and operates biometric equipment for initial and quarterly reassessments. Documents assessment and biometric data.
House Bill 984 Training/ Other
- Provides training to school personnel who are not licensed healthcare professionals in the care of elementary and secondary school students with diabetes.
- Participates in continuing education activities to maintain licensure/certification(s)
- May provide supervision for support staff
- Performs other duties as assigned
