Job description

Under direct and/or general supervision of a licensed dentist, provides chair-side assistance to dentists and oral surgeons; takes and processes digital x-rays; prepares instruments and patients for examinations and treatment; and performs other duties allowable by the California Dental Board.
Distinguishing Characteristics: The Registered Dental Assistant is a journey level classification and reports to the Clinic Administrator. Incumbents work under the technical guidance and supervision of oral surgeons and dentists and provide chair-side assistance by preparing instruments and patients for examinations and treatments. The Registered Dental Assistant class is a licensed position with additional allowable duties as compared to a Dental Assistant.
EDUCATIONAL INCENTIVE: Some positions may be eligible for educational incentive. This incentive may be 2.5%, 3.5%, or 5% for incumbents in eligible positions based on completion of an Associate's, Bachelor's, or Master's degree not required by the classification.
BILINGUAL INCENTIVE: Some positions may be eligible for bilingual incentive depending on the applicable memorandum of agreement and the needs of the department. In order to qualify for this incentive, incumbents in eligible positions must take and pass the applicable bilingual fluency examination.
AGENCY/DEPARTMENT: Health Care Agency - Ambulatory Care - Magnolia Family Medical Group
Registered Dental Assistant is represented by the Service Employees' International Union (SEIU) and is eligible for overtime compensation.

The eligible list established from this recruitment will be used to fill current and future Regular (including Temporary and Fixed-term), Intermittent, and Extra-help vacancies. There is currently one (1) Fulltime-Regular vacancy in the Magnolia Family Medical Group.


TENTATIVE SCHEDULE
OPENING DATE: 09/12/2023
CLOSING DATE: Continuous Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Reviews patient charts prior to examination.
  • Monitors patient flow and assists the Dental Director and dentist(s), to maximize productivity and to ensure that all patient records and documents are properly and accurately completed.
  • Assists patients in resolving minor difficulties, answering questions, and giving directions as authorized by the dentist.
  • Takes and records medical and dental histories and vital signs of patients.
  • Serves as dentist's chair-side assistant.
  • Performs instrument exchange procedures for operative dentistry.
  • Prepares patient for examination/treatment.
  • Operates radiographic equipment and complies with all radiographic requirements.
  • Exposes dental radiographs in accordance with state regulations as well as Ambulatory Care directive and protocol.
  • Performs functions and duties as allowed by the Dental Board of California.
  • Transports dental instruments for sterilization, and performs daily maintenance of equipment.
  • Prepares and maintains dental operatories consistent with infection control guidelines.
  • Anticipates and addresses patient/provider's needs in a timely manner to improve patient flow.
  • Performs exit procedures.
  • Makes appropriate entries in patient dental records timely and accurately.
  • Uses system computer for medical/clerical functions (i.e.Dentrix)
  • Assists with maintenance of clinical area including (but not limited to) setting up and stocking clinic, inventory and ordering supplies.
  • Comply and keep current with accreditation standards and federal, state and local regulatory requirements
  • Delivers quality customer service.
  • Uses a minimum of two patient identifiers throughout the patient care process.
  • Answers telephones and takes messages, reviews portal messages and routes as appropriate, and completes assigned tasks to ensure patient needs are addressed.
  • Attends meetings and trainings as required.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of domestic violence, child and dependent abuse protocols and mandated reporting.
  • Demonstrates cultural sensitivity and competence with patients.
  • Maintains and adheres to HIPAA.
  • Performs clerical functions, such as answering calls and scheduling appointments as needed.
  • Reports patient safety incidents to supervisor and via the patient safety reporting software.
  • Ability to work with high volume of patients, internal/external customers, and appropriately manage frequent changes, delay or unexpected events.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
These are entrance requirements to the exam process and assure neither continuance in the process nor placement on an eligible list.
EDUCATION, TRAINING, and EXPERIENCE:
  • Must possess and maintain a current valid State of California Registered Dental Assistant license.
  • Completion of a California Dental Board approved course in coronal polishing required.
  • Completion of a California Dental Board approved certification course in the application of sealants required.
  • Competent in performing dental assisting procedures to support four-handed dentistry.
  • Must possess and maintain current basic life support (BLS) in accordance with the American Heart Association required.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Must be bilingual (English/Spanish)
  • Completion of a California Dental Board approved course in Radiation Safety.
  • Completion of a California Dental Board approved course in ultrasonic scaling.
  • Must be able to clean patients' teeth with dental oversight, independently and proficiently.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of: Dental assistant procedures; principles and methods of sterilization; proper care and use of dental instruments, equipment, and materials; age-related differences and needs of patients in appropriate, specific populations from neonate through adolescence.
Ability to: effectively communicate with patients, other employees, and the public; take and process digital dental x-rays; learn basic operating room procedures necessary in oral surgery; comprehend and follow oral and written instructions; analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action.
