We are hiring! Atkins is seeking a Regional Environmental Science Manager. This position is open to our Miami, Orlando, Tallahassee, Jacksonville or Tampa, Florida offices.
This role will exercise technical expertise and provide project oversight for a diverse range of complex projects in the field of infrastructure, Environmental Science, and consulting. This position will help drive our Florida operations as a senior technical staff member, managing and performing natural resource surveys, designing, overseeing and guiding large-scale data collection and analysis, preparing reports, supporting cost estimates, and interacting with clients, subcontractors, private parties, members of the public, and regulatory agencies. This role will also oversee ecological project operations throughout the State of Florida. While this is a technical-forward role, you will also participate in business development and marketing efforts. The focus for this role will be on Florida-based projects, but it is expected that your expertise will be applied to projects across the US, and potentially internationally. Atkins is a premier environmental team of scientists who deliver a wide variety of services, including large, multidisciplinary regional wetland and habitat restoration projects, innovative water quality projects, as well as coastal ecology evaluation and monitoring projects. Our environmental group is well versed in both inland ecology and coastal habitat and works hand-in-hand with a large team of water resources, groundwater, and coastal engineers.

The Sciences team includes a nationwide reach of biologists, certified ecologists, marine biologists, professional wetland scientists, arborists, botanists, wildlife biologists, and environmental planners who are focused on addressing the unique concerns of a variety of clients including energy and utilities, ports and airports, Federal and State transportation entities, state, county, and city governments, and Federal agencies including the U.S. Corps of Engineers, Fish and Wildlife Service, Department of Defense and the National Park Service.
How will you contribute to the team?
  • Work with, oversee, and mentor ecological staff and project operations across Florida, from Miami to the Panhandle.
  • Work with the team to develop and implement strategies for identifying environmental opportunities for a range of clients.
  • Development of study plans, water quality and quantity monitoring programs, conduct/participate in natural resource field investigations, including but not limited to waters of the US; potential habitat for threatened and endangered species; vegetative community; presence/absence surveys, specimen collection and handling; construction monitoring; coastal and marine surveys, wetland mitigation design, water quality data analysis, hydrobiological/biostatistical analyses, and ecosystem restoration.
  • Prepare technical report of findings; support preparation of permits, NEPA (and/or PD&E) documents and provide peer reviews of reports prepared by others.
  • Serve as in-office (and in-field as needed) team leader for staff
  • Responsible for planning field work and reporting efforts, while coordinating schedules and milestone goals with various parties
  • Effectively communicate the results of studies performed to project management staff.
  • Help lead proposals, scopes, technical approaches, and fee estimates in the development of new business.
  • Will assist in the management of tasks and projects and will serve as a project manager.
  • Must be comfortable working and coordinating with a multidisciplinary team that may include at any one-time ecologists, design engineers, cultural resources specialists, historians, and planners, among others, typically in different offices.

What will you contribute?
  • M.S. or PhD in a field of Natural Resources such as Wildlife Biology, Botany, Marine Biology, Ecology or a related discipline with 15 or more years of experience in the environmental consulting industry or associated regulatory agency.
  • Strong analytical and interpretive skills using R and/or SAS with familiarity of statistics including parametric, nonparametric, and multivariate approaches a definite plus.
  • Desire to work with various clients and stakeholders throughout Florida to develop new business and design innovative solutions to complex environmental issues.
  • Significant experience with clients and projects in one or more of the following services lines:
    • Coastal ecology studies and restoration
    • Water quality studies and restoration
    • Environmental studies and permitting for the transportation industry (ports, highways, aviation, for example)
    • Power industry (generating facilities siting, permitting and compliance, transmission line routing)
    • State/local agencies such as water management districts and environmental agencies
    • Federal agencies such as the US Army Corps of Engineers, US Fish and Wildlife Service, or the National Park Service
    • Wetland restoration
  • Prior service with a State/Federal regulatory agency a plus.
  • Periodic travel is to be expected.
  • Plan and oversee projects from initial concept to completion. Coordinate and track people and processes to deliver projects on time, on budget, and with the desired outcomes.
  • Professional certification such as a Professional Wetland Scientist or Certified Ecologist a plus.
  • Must be confident working in harsh and inhospitable outdoor climates in the Southeastern US during all times of the year, when needed.
  • Demonstration of active industry participation through recent published articles or conference presentations and involvement in (or leadership in) professional industry-related organizations
  • Must maintain a keen awareness of safety protocols in the field and in the office.
  • Position will require use of company vehicle. Incumbent must have valid driver's license and a driving record that meets company policy.
