The Washington Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is looking for a Regeneration Testing Forester. This position is part of the team that is responsible for the field testing branch of the program, which includes the production of controlled cross-seed, and testing of that seed on forest sites around the state, as well as testing seed sources from wider areas across a broad range of climates. In this role, you will learn about tree reproductive biology, operational planting establishment practices, and genetic variation. While our main facility is in the Olympia area, we also manage sites around the state, so you'll get to travel and see different forest types.

This is a supplemental retirement savings program (similar to an IRA) that allows you control over the amount of pre-tax salary dollars you defer as well as the flexibility to choose between multiple investment options.

All state employees are covered by the federal Social Security and Medicare systems. The state and the employee pay an equal amount into the system.
Public Service Loan Forgiveness

Duties
Responsibilities:
- Lay out and establish new test sites
- Make controlled crosses between trees and clean the resulting seed
- Maintain and measure test sites
- Attend cooperative meetings and coordinate with cooperators for test sites on their land
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in forestry, horticulture, or closely related field;
OR equivalent combination of education and/or experience. - Working knowledge of forest stand establishment practices, including site preparation, planting, and vegetation management.
- Working knowledge of tree measurement tools and techniques.
- Experience navigating in unfamiliar remote areas using maps, photos, GPS, or other navigational aids.
- Demonstrated commitment to fostering and supporting an environment that honors diversity, equity and inclusion and environmental justice practices.
- Ability to perform assigned duties in a manner consistent with applicable laws, regulations, and public records retention and requests are followed.
- Experience using computers and common software applications, such as MS Word and Excel, and ideally MS Access.
- Ability to work with forestry contractors to ensure proper execution of contract provisions.

- This is primarily a field position that requires extensive work, sometimes on difficult terrain under adverse weather conditions. Office work is required and may range from 10% to 40%, depending upon the season and project workload.
- Worksites are located throughout the state, so overnight travel is often required during periods of fieldwork, which mostly occurs late spring through fall.
- A valid unrestricted driver's license and two years of driving experience. This position requires driving as an essential function. Finalists and/or interview candidates will be asked to provide a driving record from all states in which they have held a license during the past three years.
- This position is required to live within 30-minute driving distance of Meridian Seed Orchard to perform frost protection duties in an effective manner.
- Experience with controlled pollinations and seed cleaning.
- Washington State pesticide applicator license.
