Serve as a key ambassador for Motorized Recreation in the region, fostering education and outreach initiatives to the public.
Collaborating closely with enforcement staff and wildlife area managers, your primary focus will be minimizing the impact of Motorized Recreation on habitat and infrastructure.

Duties
Some of what our Motorized Recreation Education Specialist will enjoy doing,
In collaboration with the Regional Land Operations Manager, wildlife area managers and regional enforcement staff, develop and implement an education and outreach program for recreational motorized use of roads on Region 3 wildlife areas to respond to public use issues:
  • Routinely patrol roads and trails using a utility task vehicle (UTV), or motorized vehicles, contacting wildlife area motorized users and providing education.
  • Analyze areas of concern, then develop an outreach and education plan that emphasizes resource protection and user safety.
  • Document rule violations and noncompliance and provide information to enforcement for follow up as necessary.
  • Provide reports to wildlife area staff and regional enforcement staff related to issues and compliance. Collect and report on visitor use data.
  • Attend user group and club meetings, and following, develop and implement volunteer projects for road and trail maintenance.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • Work Setting, including hazards:
    • This position is primarily a field position, working approximately 85% in the field and 15% in an office setting.
    • Will work outdoors in adverse weather conditions, and some hiking may be required.
    • Operate vehicles for long periods of time, on uneven terrain and under all weather conditions. This will include four-wheel drive vehicles on highways and forest roads, and UTV's on roads and some trails in moderate to difficult terrain.
  • Schedule:
    • Typically, 40 hours per week. The position must work a flexible work schedule that will include some evenings, weekend work and seasonal schedule adjustments which reflect recreation use patterns.
  • Travel Requirements:
    • Position requires daily travel from the office to the field. Travel and overnight stays are minimal but will be required for training.
  • Tools and Equipment:
    • Agency vehicle, utility task vehicle (UTV), chainsaw, other hand tools, and a radio and cellphone for communication in the field.
  • Customer Interactions:
    • Position requires contact with the public, volunteers, external customers, stakeholders daily and contact with, tribes, various state and local governments and environmental groups weekly to monthly. Position may be in contact with frustrated users and stakeholders.

  • Qualifications
    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
    • Bachelor's degree involving major study in forestry, agriculture, aquaculture, geology, recreation, or related natural science.

    AND
    • One (1) year of professional experience in a related Natural Resources specialty area.
      1. Examples of related Natural Resource experience may include working on a farm/ranch, conducting agricultural enhancement/farming practices, operating heavy equipment, and conducting wildlife or habitat enhancement practices.

    Please Note: Closely related qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-by-year basis.
    Certifications/Licenses:
    • Valid Driver's license.

    Special Requirements/Conditions of Employment:
    • All-terrain vehicle (ATV) and utility task vehicle (UTV) certifications - training will be provided and must be completed within six (6) months of hire.
    • First Aid and CPR training - agency provided and must be completed training within six (6) months of hire.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
    In addition to those required qualifications, our ideal applicant will also have some or all of the following:
    • Minimum of one (1) year of experience as Natural Resource Specialist 1 or in a related Natural Resources field.
    • Experience in recreation management.
    • Public outreach and communication experience.
    • All-terrain vehicle (ATV) and utility task vehicle (UTV) operation experience.
    • Experience with computer software and hardware (Microsoft Suite).
