Job Description

Population Served: Geriatric population & individuals living with advanced physical illness; neuro-cognitive disorders, short term rehabilitation, psychiatric, Schizophrenia, and residents with developmental and physical disabilities.

Position Summary: This position utilizes creative arts therapy/recreation therapy interventions to provide the clinical assessment and treatment of physical, psychosocial, and spiritual end-of-life issues for patients and caregivers in accordance with the interdisciplinary plan-of-care; participates in the clinical training and supervision of creative arts therapy/recreation therapy interns; and supports special programming, research, and education.

Position Reports To: Director of Therapeutic Recreation and Creative Arts Therapy

Job Competency: Evidence of receiving a bachelors, master's, or doctoral degree in Creative Arts Therapy and/or Recreation Therapy from a program that is: Registered by the NY State Department of Education as licensure qualifying, or determined by the Department to be the substantial equivalent of such a registered or accredited program.

License or Certifications: Evidence of New York State-approved licensure (LCAT or CTRS) or eligible for limited permit as a creative arts therapist.

Position Description:

Assists in the development, implementation, and monitoring of creative arts therapy programs.

  • A creative arts therapist will be responsible for developing, organizing, and administering creative arts therapy programs to provide therapeutic treatment to patients in one or more of the following areas: short term rehabilitation population, residents with neurocognitive disorders, residents with developmental and physical disabilities, and residents with psychiatric illness.
  • Assessment, evaluation, therapeutic intervention and treatment targeted to evaluate and treat residents facing end-of-life crises, bereavement, physical illness, neurocognitive and developmental disorders in group and individual therapy sessions through the use of creative arts, mental health counseling and psychotherapy, and assessment instruments as approved by the department.

P.002 * Employs therapeutic objectives that are complex because of severe and multiple disabilities regularly encountered.

  • Incorporates therapeutic objectives and practices that are developmentally appropriate, enabling, normalizing, and culturally sensitive.
  • Supports social interaction skills, coping skills such as adjustment to change of health and change of environment, and cognitive retraining.
  • Interviews residents and families, interprets medical record information, reviews therapy prescriptions, and conducts mental and physical evaluations of patients in order to develop and implement a treatment plan.
  • Maintains confidentiality of resident and family information.
  • Completes assessments, MDS documentation, and care plans for residents according to facility policies.
  • Monitors the resident’s progress and make suggestions for alterations to the resident’s care plan as necessary. * Participates in weekly interdisciplinary care plan meetings.

Provides Therapeutic Activities. * Assesses the clinical needs of developmentally disabled patients, patients with neurocognitive disorders, psychiatric patients, rehabilitation residents; identify and implement appropriate creative arts therapy techniques to address targeted goals; and effectively document the results of the creative arts therapy interventions.

  • Administers creative arts therapy interventions that strengthen debilitated muscles resulting from advanced age, prolonged bed rest, amputation, stroke, fractures, wound care, and joint replacement.
  • Develops creative art therapy groups, psycho-social activities, and holding environments for coping with loss, abandonment, frustration, stress, and anger.
  • Selects, adapts, and/or adjusts creative arts therapy modalities in accordance with resident’s abilities and rehabilitation goals.
  • Collaborates with interdisciplinary care team regarding resident care. Plans, implements, and creates monthly creative arts therapy activity programs.
  • Facilitates psychosocial activities including trips and birthday parties as a therapeutic tool in order to normalize life in an institutional setting.
  • Utilize reminiscence and validation therapy as an intervention in appropriate situations during creative arts therapy programing.
  • Maintains creative arts therapy areas, equipment and supplies accordingly to meet program needs.
  • Assists in facilitating interaction between residents and volunteers during select creative art therapy groups.
  • Coordinates and supervises the transportation of residents to outside programs as established by facility policy outing procedures.

Participates in and adhere to employee health and safety program and activities.P.003

  • Conducts all activities within established safety and infection control procedures and guidelines.
  • Utilizes required personal protective equipment as needed and as per facility policies.
  • Utilizes good judgment in application of safety and protective devices.
  • Operates equipment and machinery in accordance with manufacturer’s directions and facility procedures.
  • Receives annual health assessment including appropriate screening for tuberculosis.
  • Corrects unsafe or hazardous conditions encountered, if unable to correct, report condition to supervisor upon discovery.
  • Responds to fire/disaster drills and emergencies.
  • Reports all accidents and incidents to supervisor immediately upon occurrence.
  • Ensures resident is safe and equipment is secure at all times.
  • Ensures the proper disinfection of equipment after each use.
  • Ensures that waste containing blood and other potentially infectious bodily fluids is disposed of properly.

Participates in in-service and job training programs. * Attends mandatory in-services annually.

  • Attends in-services, workshops and seminars to further professional development.

Other related duties and activities as may become necessary or as directed by the Director of Recreation and Creative Arts Therapy.Job Type: Temporary
