DEFINITION
Support the daily activity of Recreation Center youth classes and youth programs. Seasonally perform duties of a day camp site director. Help coordinate and support recreation services as a facet of the City's Recreation Programs. This position must work well independently and with teams, while providing excellent, respectful customer service and human relations skills, which support the City of Brighton's mission and values.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives supervision from Assistant Recreation Coordinator. Exercises functional supervision over part-time staff, contract and volunteers.
EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Develops, plans and executes programming for pre-school, elementary, middle and high school populations. Activities to including community meetings, classes, workshops and special events.
Takes a lead role in planning and assisting youth programs with support from the Assistant Recreation Coordinator.
Seasonally performs duties of day camp director.
Pre-season: Assists with planning activities and outings for the program, assists with planning and conducting staff training, assists with job interviews and hiring of day camp staff.
Camp season: Works up to 25-30 hours per week as site director, including; providing specific value-added activities for groups of campers; working on-site for shifts as camp lead or as on-duty site director; attending all field trips.
Acts as a close liaison with the community and provides information concerning areas of specialty and recreation activities.
Maintains records and prepares reports.
Gives information to the public regarding the Recreation Center and City Recreation Programs and Services.
Performs other responsibilities as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
Specialized recreation area and the principal rules, materials and equipment of the specialized activities
Ability to:
Plan, organize and implement specific recreation programs or activities such as classes, sports leagues or special events
Work with the public
Maintain program discipline
Communicate effectively both orally and in writing
Train and provide functional supervision for temp, contract and volunteers staff
Participate as a leader or instructor in a variety of tiny tot, youth and teen activities
Safely operate a motor vehicle during a variety of weather conditions while working
Operate standard office equipment like a copier, fax machine and telephone
Demonstrate skill with using a personal computer and associated software (like Word, Excel, Outlook, Internet Explorer)
Work flexible hours, with evenings, weekends and some holidays, as needed to support programming
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or equivalent and experience organizing similar types of recreation programs or activities. At least 6 months' experience organizing recreation programs with either a municipal recreation center or community-based recreation facility preferred.
Must meet the requirements of a CO state licensed day camp director;
minimum age of 21 years,
Must have one of the following with documentation:
• A 4-year college degree with a major such as recreation, education with a specialty in art, elementary or early childhood education, or a subject in the human service field, and 12 months (1820 hours) of satisfactory and verifiable experience, since attaining the age of 18, in the care and supervision or 4 or more children, not related to the individual
• Two years of college training and 12 months (1820 hours) of satisfactory and verifiable experience, since attaining the age of 18, in the care and supervision of 4 or more children, not related to the individual.
• Three years (5460 hours) of satisfactory and verifiable experience, since attaining the age of 18, in the care and supervision of 4 or more children.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand and walk for extended periods of time. The employee is frequently required to talk or hear. The employee is required to reach with hands and arms and manipulate equipment. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include Close vision and Distance vision.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Possession of a valid Colorado driver's license with safe driving record.
Meets the state licensing requirements to be director-qualified.
Current certification in First Aid and CPR, or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire.
Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.
Ability to complete FEMA ICS 100 and IS 700 training within six (6) months of hire.
