Special Information:
Identity of applicants who become finalists may be released to the public if the Department deems it necessary. Under supervision of the Recreation Manager, the Recreation (River) Ranger position is assigned primarily to the Madison River corridor and based out of the FWP regional office in Bozeman, MT. Employment time period is typically from mid-April through early October. Must be in good physical condition. Must perform outdoor heavy manual tasks and be able to safely navigate a loaded solo or tandem canoe or a raft on a river with another river ranger or alone. A valid driver's license is required and must be able to drive manual and automatic transmission 4x4 trucks. Work assignments include tasks performed in all kinds of weather and occasionally at other than normal working hours or shifts

Essential Functions (Major Duties or Responsibilities):

Duties vary according to site type. When and where applicable, the position is responsible for the following:

Natural Resource and Site Management

  • Assists with the daily operations at assigned state parks, fishing access sites, and within river corridors and with recreation management on wildlife management areas.
  • Provides resource stewardship in a proactive manner, providing recommendations to the Recreation Manager based on observations of visitors, staff, volunteers, and the resource conditions.
  • Monitors for unacceptable impacts to site infrastructure and natural resources, or safety issues, and assists in development of solutions to correct or mitigate problematic impacts.
  • Acts as a lead worker when supervising or directing seasonal employees and volunteers. This includes assisting with recruitment, training, and evaluation of assigned staff.
  • Completes assigned administrative functions such as fee collection, banking, remittance processing, collection of visitation information, incident reporting, comment card processing, visitor surveys, authorized purchases, enterprise sales and inventory, and applicable reservation/registration processes.
  • Assists Recreation Manager with allowable resource permitting and compliance of archeological, geologic, paleontological, biologic, and historical activities at the site(s). Documentation and permitting may include environmental analysis.
  • Assists with or leads public meetings and presentations as it relates to development and management of the site, planning processes, and adjacent landowner issues.
  • Assists manager with identifying and applying for grant and other financial opportunities, oversight of personal service contracts, and other agreements.
  • Addresses and resolves visitor conflicts and complaints.

Safety Practices

  • Helps ensure safety of staff and visitors.
  • Participates in, and if qualified, provides training in personal protective equipment (PPE) and safety programs.
  • Participates in grounds and facility inspections to identify hazardous conditions, triaging and communicating hazardous conditions and maintenance needs as required for public and staff safety.
  • Provides first aid within scope of training.
  • Assists local and state emergency services personnel in site-specific incident control, first aid, search and rescue, and emergency services.
  • Participates in the implementation of site emergency operations plans.

Rule Compliance

  • Helps patrol assigned units via motor vehicle, foot, watercraft, horseback, bicycle, or snowmobile to monitor visitor activities and resource conditions.
  • Explains and interprets rules, policies, and laws to public.
  • Provides information to assist FWP Wardens and other law enforcement agencies in the enforcement of laws, rules, and regulations.
  • Investigates and documents offenses and incidents in accordance with agency policy.
  • Informs visitors on preserving and mitigating impacts on historical, cultural, natural, and recreational resources.
  • Assists with permit administration and compliance.
  • Understands enforcement authority and jurisdictional thresholds and who to call for assistance for a wide variety of situations. May serve as incident commander until relieved by supervisor or other proper authority.

Visitor Services

  • Provides visitor information and assistance.
  • Schedules tours, group use and special recreational use at sites.
  • Participates in tourism and marketing programs.
  • Assists Recreation Manager with support of (friends and partners) group planning and project implementation.
  • Assists in the implementation of visitor surveys.

Interpretive and Educational Services (where applicable)

  • Participates in day-to-day and special event interpretive and education programs.
  • Participates with coordination and facilitation of youth and adult programs.
  • Participates with guided tours of visitor center and site resources.
  • Provides public presentations, on-site and statewide, with respect to site resources and department-wide recreation management offerings.
  • Participates with the design, implementation, and distribution of informational pamphlets, brochures, educational materials, and teaching resources.
  • Participates in oversight and assists with development of interpretive and educational program materials, including educational trunks.
  • Assists in development and implementation of special events and regularly scheduled educational program offerings.

Other Duties

  • Provides assistance for persons with disabilities when needed.
  • Light-duty maintenance responsibilities including grounds keeping, and janitorial services

Physical and Environmental Demands:

  • Ability to sit or stand for long periods of time.
  • Ability to work in environmental extremes for long periods of time.
  • Ability to assist public independently, in extremely harsh terrain, and at night.
  • Occasional travel.
  • Working odd hours, weekends and holidays is required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Behaviors):

  • Knowledge of recreation management, familiarity with natural and cultural resource management principles, including historical and current issues.
  • Background in natural resources, recreation, and cultural resources.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, in a concise and interpretable manner, with department employees, the public, special interest groups and appropriate land management agencies.
  • Proficiency in the safe handling and operation of site-specific modes of transportation, such as motorized and non-motorized watercraft, bicycles, and snow machines.
  • Knowledge of the laws, policies, and regulations under which the agency operates.
  • Ability to negotiate, explain, and diffuse conflict among parties with differing views and visitors frustrated with department/site rules and policy.
  • Ability to work effectively in extreme environmental conditions.

Minimum Qualifications (Education and Experience):

The knowledge, skills, and abilities of this position are normally attained through a combination of education and experience equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in park and or recreation management, archeology, geology, or related fields. Other combinations of education and experience will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
