Job description

The Burlington Parks, Recreation & Waterfront Department (BPRW) is currently seeking a motivated intern with interest in learning about all aspects of municipal recreation programming. This intern will support the programming staff and work directly with the Recreation Program Manager to plan and execute multiple community programs over the course of the summer.

Learning objectives

  • To familiarize the intern with all aspects of program planning and management.
  • To gain experience in working with multiple stakeholders, opinions, and processes.
  • To learn about working in a fast-paced environment running multiple programs at once.
  • Provides support to BPRW programming staff.
  • Assists with planning and implementation of multiple summer programs, including licensed and specialty camps; recreation & nutrition program; adult programs; outdoor programs; and other programs as needed.
  • Interacts with contractors and vendors, works with department marketing to advertise programs, produces surveys and reports and attends meetings as needed.
  • Offers assistance to other recreation activities as needed (events, parks, waterfront, etc.).
  • Ability to actively support City diversity, equity, and cultural competency efforts within stated job responsibilities and work effectively across diverse cultures and constituencies.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion as evidenced by ongoing trainings and professional development.
  • Proof of COVID-19 vaccination required, reasonable accommodations will be considered.
  • Ability to work on evenings and weekends as necessary.
  • Ability to work with diverse populations and people of all ages.
  • Basic Microsoft suite experience preferred (Word, Excel, etc.).
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Preferably has a car, or the ability to get to different locations throughout the Burlington area.
  • Must have valid driver's license.
  • Must be able to move equipment up to 50 pounds.
