Job description


The Assistant Center Director plans, organizes, and directs the operations and activities at Lions Park Community Center personally, with the Center Director or through subordinate employees. Central duties include the ability to dynamically engage the community and conduct outreach to underserved populations to develop and market programs for diverse ages and populations. Additionally, this role supervises part time staff and volunteers.
Lions Park Community Center:
Lions Park Community Center was built in 1961 and sits on 41.4 acres near Saint Augustine's University and downtown Raleigh. It is one of the largest metro parks in the City of Raleigh. The Community Center was partially renovated in 2019 which includes a new wood floor gymnasium, lobby, restrooms, and locker rooms. The building also has two meeting rooms, warming kitchen and fitness room. The park includes a playground, picnic shelter, eight tennis courts, two lighted outdoor basketball courts, two softball fields, two youth baseball fields, and outdoor restrooms. The park also has a BMX Track with the maintenance, practices, and races managed by contractor Capital City BMX. Lions Community Center also manages Oakwood Park which has a picnic shelter, two softball fields and a dog park. Lions Park staff run youth summer camp as well as a variety of recreation classes and activities for preschool through adults.
Central duties and responsibilities for success in these positions include the ability to dynamically engage the community and conduct outreach to underserved populations; to program and market for diverse ages and populations; multi-task amid programming, rentals, and events; communicate effectively with patrons; and lead a team of part time staff that are critical to maintaining operations.
Work Hours:
This position works at a Community Center that is open 7 days a week. Flexibility is required to be available for staff meetings, facility events, and providing coverage to part-time staff.
  • Assist with managing general and revolving funds, tracking and reporting of expenses and analysis of facility spending needs and procures supplies for facility and program operation
  • Assist with coordinating facility rentals and offsite amenities
  • Assist with developing, delivering and enhancing new and existing facility programs and special events for a 66-81 hours/week facility and oversees class observation and instructor evaluation
  • Assist with recruiting part-time staff including front desk support, certified instructors, and internal partnerships for program implementation
  • Provides customer service to patrons and the community, acting as a first-line departmental representative at public meetings and Neighborhood Registry Groups as well as managing patron complaints, refund requests, transfers or other exceptions
  • Assist with administration of athletic leagues and communicates with involved parties regarding inclement weather, evaluation of fields, participant safety and canceling/rescheduling games
  • Assist with resource teams, public leadership groups and citizen planning committees
  • Assist with regularly inspection of the facility and park areas and submits service requests for maintenance as needed
Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree in parks and recreation, business or public administration and five years of professional parks and recreation programming, planning and/or facility management experience
OR
An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation.
Licensing and Certifications:
  • CPR/First Aid/AED/EPI certification, or the ability to obtain within 60 days post hire
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Certified Parks and Recreation Professional; City of Raleigh additionally offers support in obtaining this certification
  • Valid North Carolina Class C Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 30 days of hire
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Project and program administration and management
  • Principles and methods of qualitative and quantitative research, critical thinking and analysis
  • Modern budget practices for interpreting and reporting financial information and statistics
  • Authoring and preparing original reports, documents and presentations
  • Supervisory methods for organizing, prioritizing, assigning and monitoring work and coaching and leading the work of others
  • Providing exemplary customer service
  • Marketing programs utilizing best practices, trends, and emerging technologies
  • Community engagement and conducting outreach to marginalized and underserved populations.
  • Building and maintaining effective and professional working relationships with community members and community agencies
  • Utilizing judgment in determining strategies to deescalate a variety of situations
  • Establishing rapport and understanding the problems presented by at high risk/marginalized juveniles
ADA and Other Requirements:
Positions in this class typically require: stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.
Medium Work:
Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Working Conditions:
Work is performed in both the field and in an indoor office environment with frequent exposure to hazardous physical conditions (such as mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibration, and so forth); frequent exposure to atmospheric conditions (such as fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, and so forth); moderate exposure to hazardous materials (such as chemicals, blood and other body fluids); frequent exposure to environmental conditions (such as disruptive people, imminent danger, or a threatening environment); frequent exposure to extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting and movement restrictions; and moderate exposure intense noise or travel.
