Position Summary:

The job of a Recreation Coordinator I - Generalist at Portland Parks & Recreation SUN Community Schools [https://www.multco.us/SUN] involves organizing various academic, recreational, enrichment, and community service activities. These activities may take place in Community Centers or other recreation sites/programs.

Recreation Coordinator I - Generalists may handle general recreation tasks or work on very specialized projects that require specific skills. They might also be responsible for overseeing the work of Recreation Leaders. These coordinators receive supervision from higher-level recreation personnel, who assess their work through observation, discussion, and reviewing reports and outcomes.


What you'll get to do:
  • Assess the needs of the school community.
  • Create activities and/or projects for youth and create ways to support their families, like making sure no one goes hungry. Work together with groups, and partners creating an equitable and sustainable SUN Community School Site.
  • Include Black, Indigenous, People of Color, refugees and immigrants, those with disabilities and experiencing poverty in planning and organizing events and services.
  • Develop and deliver culturally and socio-economic responsive activities, events and services.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders, school administration, culturally centered partners, program partners and school community.
  • Provide Hunger Relief opportunities where food shortages exist, energy and rental assistance, and providing various services as needed.
  • Schedule and promote classes and events, recruit and work with instructors, support staff and volunteers, lead regularly scheduled meetings.
  • Maintain accurate records and create and complete reports on time.
  • Assist with hiring part-time and seasonal employees, directing and reviewing the work, and entering timesheets in payroll system.
  • Provide information about programs electronically, through social media, over the phone and in-person about providing a safe and nurturing environment for youth and meals during extended day programming.

  1. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders such as school district administration, community-based organizations, marginalized communities, co-workers, supervisors, volunteers, advisory groups and the public.
  2. Experience with program administration and implementation, in the field of community service, trauma-informed, education and leisure activities including current trends and literature, such as assessment, planning, development, coordination, and evaluation.
  3. Experience working with people who are Black, Indigenous, People of Color, including immigrants and refugees, people with disabilities, those experiencing poverty and/or houselessness in providing effective supports for youth and their families.
  4. Experience recruiting, assigning, and directing work, motivating, and reviewing performance of permanent, part-time and volunteer staff.
  5. Experience with computer programs that require data entry including course entry and registration processes, maintaining accurate records (financial deposits, receipts participant data), and creating and maintaining reports and program marketing materials.
