About the job:
The Trails Coordinator is responsible for overseeing the maintenance operations and coordinating projects for the District's hard and soft surface trail system for multiple user types. This position works with the Trails Supervisor and trail crew in assessing the operations and maintenance needs of the District's trails, trail assets, and requirements of trail easements. Field duties will include trail maintenance of hard and soft surface trails, new trail construction, noxious weed management and native area restoration.
A day in the life:
The information provided below encompasses the typical duties and capabilities linked with this classification. Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Coordinates and oversees the work of District staff and contractors on new construction and renovation trail projects; responsible for routine maintenance assessments of the District's trails and trail assets, addressing maintenance needs, coordinating and participating in trail project daily operations, assists in plans, helping prioritize daily crew work; ensures work is accomplished on time.
  • Coordinates volunteer events as they arise.
  • Reviews and provides input on plans and specifications for park and trail construction and renovation projects; consults with BPRD NRT Manager, Trail Supervisor, and Planning & Development staff on design in the development of new trails and the selection of various components and materials. Provides information for divisional budget; coordinates contracts; allocates resources; researches and recommends expenditures.
  • Ensures worker and site safety; addresses and resolves safety concerns.
  • Leads trail counter program. Builds counter mounting systems and determines best installation locations. Regularly downloads and manages counter data in TRAFx program. Creates reports including graphs, charts and spreadsheets that help answer questions about trail system user behavior trends.
  • Share data with the City of Bend and BPRD staff as requested.
  • Assist with presenting trail counter data at Board Meetings.
  • Assist BPRD NRT and Planning & Development planning multiple ways, including; Helps with review and implementation of sign packages and other trail assets to determine correct signage and location placement; Provides recommendations on trail design and location for new and rerouted trails appropriate to site conditions and easement stipulations.
  • Assists NRT Manager and Trails Supervisor in mapping trails, property boundaries and sign locations information using best practices workflows for GIS software (e.g., ESRI field applications) as they may arise.
  • Works with BPRD staff to maintain work order system (e.g., Maintenance Connection) data requirements ensuring accuracy and relevance for reporting metrics.
  • Maintains regular and punctual attendance.
  • Contributes to a positive and constructive work environment. Performs other job duties as assigned.

  • Ability to accept and integrate feedback graciously and give effective feedback to team members.
  • Reports child abuse and suspected child abuse as a mandatory reporter under Oregon law.

Requirements:What We're Looking For:
Education, Experience, and Training:

  • Associate’s Degree or equivalent 2 years of college coursework; Natural resources, outdoor recreation, or related field preferred; AND
  • Three (3) years of experience in park maintenance, trails maintenance, operations and construction, natural resources, forest management, or construction; OR
  • Two (2) years of experience managing trails construction, operations and maintenance projects; OR
  • Any satisfactory combination of education, experience and training.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Possession of, or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire, a valid Oregon driver’s license.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire, a valid Basic First Aid/CPR certification.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain within one year of hire, a valid Public Pesticide Applicator’s license.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain within one year of hire, a chainsaw certification.

Supervisor received:
Works under the supervision of the Trails Supervisor. Follows standard processes and procedures without supervision but confirms changes to standard practices and significant decision in advance.

Working conditions:
The following are working conditions, including environmental and physical demands, required for this classification.

  • Duties are performed indoors and outdoors with exposure to inclement weather including heat, cold, humidity, wind, snow, and rain.
  • Exposure to various hazardous chemical, fumes, and high noise levels.
  • Daily standing and walking over uneven terrain, such as parks and trails with up/down inclines, paved and unpaved surfaces for sustained periods of time.
  • Safety equipment, including shoes, gloves, reflective vests and eye protection are required.
  • Daily operation of a motor vehicle on public roadways.

  • Making substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers, and constant use of hands and arms and may require overhead reaching.
  • Occasional lifting, moving, dragging, pushing and carrying of heavy objects (up to 50 pounds unassisted).
  • Occasional crouching, crawling, bending, kneeling, climbing or balancing.
  • May require working for emergency call-outs or snow removal during off duty hours including some holidays.
