RHA Behavioral Health Services is looking for compassionate and supportive Certified Peer Support Professional to join our dedicated interdisciplinary healthcare team providing peer support services and assisting clients with determining personal goals for recovery.
In this dynamic role you will use your experience and knowledge to provide highly individualized services in the community, promoting individual self-determination and decision-making to individuals with Mental Health or Substance Abuse issues. DHH Recover Coach (Certified Peer Support Professional) provides highly individualized services in the community and promotes individual self-determination and decision-making to individuals with Substance Abuse issues. Works in conjunction with SAIOP program staff to ensure that Deaf consumers of IOP services are as fully integrated into the recovery process at the IOP. Certified Peer Support Specialists also provide essential expertise and consultation to the entire team to promote a culture in which each individual's point of view and preferences are recognized, understood, respected and integrated into treatment, rehabilitation, and community self-help activities. This position may serve as an advocate for the person supported. Performs a wide range of tasks to assist the people supported in regaining control over their own recovery processes. These interventions are strength-based and focused on promoting recovery, symptom reduction, increased coping skills, and achievement of the highest level of functioning in the community. Functions as a role model of competency in recovery and ongoing coping skills. Staff ratio takes into consideration evening and weekend hours, needs of special populations and geographical areas to be served.
Job Responsibilities
As a DHH Recover Coach (Certified Peer Support Professional) l you will be responsible for providing essential expertise and consultation to the entire interdisciplinary healthcare team to promote a culture in which each individual's point of view and preferences are recognized, understood, respected and integrated into treatment, rehabilitation, and community self-help activities while serving as an advocate for clients.
Additional responsibilities of the DHH Recover Coach (Certified Peer Support Professional) l include:
  • Meeting with clients to provide advice and support in accordance with a treatment plan
  • Assisting in peer support groups with assigned consumers on a regular basis
  • Supporting/assisting consumers in daily decision making and resolution of minor problems
  • Assisting clients by finding resources, advising the consumer of processes, and encouraging follow through with proposed resolutions, locating social activities, or provide other assistance as needed
  • Accompanying clients to meetings and participates in meetings of community groups to advocate for consumer needs, leading recovery dialogues/self-help sessions with clients
  • Fostering client's development of healthy relationships by encouraging participation in community activities
  • Observing behavior and evidence of general well-being and discusses observations with the clients
  • Modeling effective coping and self-help techniques to individuals or groups of consumers
  • Providing advice to clients on empowerment skills and successful community living
  • Informing clients on community resources and how to use them appropriately, providing information to consumers and families on specific topics, as assigned
  • Assists with Employee Health and Safety- Operates agency or personal vehicles safely. Promptly reports any problems with vehicles to supervisor. Maintains current licensure appropriate for the vehicle being operated and vehicle insurance as required by law.
  • Assists with Quality Management Performance- Participates in monitoring of consumer support services and programs. Provides support in interviewing consumers to obtain information regarding their satisfaction/dissatisfaction. Maintains a working knowledge of current trends and developments in the field by reading books, journals, etc
  • Assists Support Staff with Various Tasks- Assists designated clinical staff with their counseling approaches for consumers. Participates in treatment team activities. Attends treatment team meetings for assigned consumers. Provide transportation for consumers. Provides information regarding observations of and interactions with consumers
  • Assists with Peer Support Coaching- Provides peer support services to assigned people supported. Assists person supported in determining personal goals for recovery. Meets with individual consumers to provide advice and support in accordance with treatment plan. Supports/assists consumers in daily decision making and resolution of minor problems. Assists consumers with filing complaints by finding resources, advising the consumer of processes, and encouraging follow through with proposed resolutions, as needed. Accompanies consumers to meetings and participates in meetings of community groups to advocate for consumer needs. Observes behavior and evidence of general well-being and discusses observations with the consumer. Models effective coping and self-help techniques to individuals or groups of consumers. Provides advice to consumers on empowerment skills and successful community living. Participates in the development of effective consumer/family satisfaction in measurement instruments. Assists each consumer to meet needs. May access services, locate social activities, or provide other assistance as needed
  • Assists with Documentation and Reporting- Participates in the monitoring and documentation of the progress of assigned consumers. Completes incident/accident reports, when necessary. Assists consumers with completion of any forms, as requested. Properly completes trip reports in a timely manner
  • Performs Specialist Responsibilities- Attends seminars and meetings when available. Maintains knowledge by reading up-to-date articles, books, etc. Maintains a continuing education program by attending in-service training when scheduled. Serves as an advocate for consumers within the facility and the community.

Successful candidates of the Peer Support Professional role are able to work as a member of a healthcare interdisciplinary team with a focus on ensuring a successful recovery and overall mental health for clients.
Additional requirements of the Peer Support Professional include:
  • Meet Qualified Professional requirements
    Qualified Professional is defined as an individual who is: (a) an individual who holds a license, provisional license, certificate, registration or permit issued by the governing board regulating a human service profession, except a registered nurse who is licensed to practice in the State of North Carolina by the North Carolina Board of Nursing who also has four years of full-time accumulated experience in MH/DD/SA with the population served; the QP function may be completed by a Certified Clinical Addiction Specialist (CCAS) or Certified Clinical Supervisor (CCS); or
    (b) a graduate of a college or university with a Master's degree in a human service field and has one year of full-time post-graduate degree accumulated MH/DD/SA experience with the population served; or (c) a graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree in a human service field with two years of full-time, post-bachelor's degree accumulated MH/DD/SA experience with the population served; or (d) a graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree in a field other than human services with four years of full-time, post-bachelor's degree accumulated MH/DD/SA experience with the population served. All staff providing Peer Support Specialist services shall have a minimum of one year documented experience with the population to be served in advocacy, advisory or governance.
  • 1 year of experience working with persons with the population supported
  • Certified as a Peer Support Specialist or 1 continuous year as a current or former recipient of treatment (including mental health/substance abuse treatment or diagnosis) and eligibility for certification as Peer Support Specialist by the governing agency
  • Certified Recovery Coach- Staff in this role shall complete a minimum of twenty (20) hours of training specific to the role of Recovery Coach.
  • SLPI Advanced Plus- Staff will be fluent in American Sign Language and achieve a Sign Language Proficiency Interview (SLPI) rating of Advanced Plus or higher within 3 months of hire
  • Must complete a minimum of twenty (20) hours of training specific to the required components of the specific service definition including crisis response within the first 90 days of employment
  • Valid drivers' license and automotive insurance
  • Ability to pass background check and drug screen
